The Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, JANUARY 14, 1884.

It appears that Mr Wakefield will contest the Selwyn seat after alii '- At an interview between Mr Richardson and'Mr WaVefield;* oil Saturday > last, the former gentleman abandoned whatever intention he had of talcing the field, and the struggle is therefore left 1 between Mr Wakefield and Mr M'Lachlan. The retirement of Mr Richardson renders Mr Wakefield 's election almost a certainty. Mr M'Lachlan is a local artisan, and hardly known outside the district. He fought the seat on the last occasion, but was defeated by Mr Lee, i>y a substantial majority. On that occasion .he contested the election as an 'Independent Ministerialist," but he now comes forward as a Ministerialist, minus the Independent. Referring to the subject the Otago Daily 2'jwessays:- --" Selwyn has always been well represented in the House, even before the days when Sir John Hall adorned its representation. Apparently the constituency is now to be wooed by three gentlemen, all far above the average. Mr Wakefleld is, next to Sir George Grey, the most eloquent speaker in New Zealand. In experience of public affairs in the Colony and general knowledge of all kinds he has few equals in the House or the country."
