POLITICAL DISHONESTY.
(To thb Editor, Inanoah-caTimbs.) Sir,— The vicious principle and practice of public men (who are placed, or rather misplaced, in positions of trust by the public, being guided or influenced by personal feelings, preferences, or class attachments, instead of using the power they are entrusted with impartially aud honestly, with disinterested motives, and consideration for the interests and welfare of the whole community) is nowhere, more conspicuously practised than iv our Reefton County Coun.iJ, a fact which must be painfully apparent to all unbiassed observers. At tbe last meeting of ' ouncil there were applications read from : Robert Roe and William Fox for pecuniary assistance to enable them to go to the hot springs, as recommended by their medical advisers. The application 'of Robert Roe was not entertained, but it was proposed by our County Chairman, »econded by Councillor Feehan, and carried "That the sum of £20 be granted is charitable aid to William Foxr" NoW, [ express no opinion as to the justice of ihese men's applications, but I am dendedly of opinion that it is unfair to jrarit the one and refuse the other. Although the applicants referred to 3elong to different nationalities, and differ n political principles, they hatre an equal •ight to public charity. But it appears >ur County Councillors do not think bo. There are other matters of a similar 'haracter which I could refer to, tut, as it night. occupy too much of your spade at >rosertt, I will leave it for t future occaiion — I «n, «&.., 6jBB_RVBR.
