LYELL MINING.

<Ltell Times.) -''-* / jpRibAY, January 25* ' Mining matters at present are very quiet, there being nothing whatever out . of ' the ordinary rim of affairs to chronicle. A considerable amount -of work is, however, being done towards opening up the various mines now in operation. The United Alpine Company have driven between 60 and 70 feet -north upon the -reef, in \o. 6 level; -•four-' feet of stone showing' in the face. The country is very hai'd and progress consequently comparatively slow. Outside, Mr Osborne has" a large staff. of htndi employed upon his contract for shoot, paddock and tramways, and with a continuance of the present splendid weather should have the contract completed in five or six weeks' tinie. The tributers are lowering stone to the battery paddock, and will shortly commence crushing. — The Great Wonder Company are -doing a good deal of prospecting and may at any moment be amply rewarded for their labors by the discovery of what is by some styled the "jugular" of the Alpine range. — The Lyell' Creek Extended contractors continue to meet bard country, and progres is propretionately slow. — Tenders close on Wednesday next for driving 100 feet for the Ty r Conriell Company. Should payable quartz be struck in this contract, several other leases .will likely be at once manned, and an increased- • impetusgivengenerallyto mining on the Alpine Range.— At the- United Victory, very slow progress is being made with No. 2 level extension, owing to the excessively hard nature of the country. ■—The Croesus Company, as stated last week, are opei'ating upon the south block with fair result, and good time lis being made by the battery. — The United Italy, hands have driven 15 feet north and 12 feet south upon the reef, which maintains its usual width in both faces, viz., from five to six feet At the battery matters are going ahead satisfactorily.
