It ia considered likely that the Government will postpone the consideration of the proposed revision of the tariff, and proceed with the Property Tax scheme, and the increased duties on tea and tobacco. Sir Stafford Northcote has given notice in the House of Commons of his intention to move on Tuesday next, 12th, that the recent disasters to the Egyptian army in Soudan are the results of the wavering policy of the Government in connection with Egypt. The Marquis of Salisbury in the House of Lords has given notice of a similar motion to Northcote's, and the discussion is also fixed for Tuesday. It has transpired that the Mediterranean squadron under Admiral Lord John Hay has been ordered to proceed without delay to Soukim. A force of £'1,200 marines also embark at Portsmouth this week for the same destination. The haily News publishes a telegram announcing that Gordon Pasha has been captured and made prisoner by the tribes near Korosko, who are now in revolt The Bank of England to-day raised the rate of discount from 3 to $£ per cent. Received Feb. 8, 12.40 p.m. Sydney, 8. A motion setting forth that the financial proposals of the Government are not satisfactory has been tabled by Young in the Legislative Assembly. It is understood that the mover is not acting in concurrence with the leaders of the opposition party. „ Further details in connection with the proposed tax on property, have transpired. Under the Bill to be introduced the Banks will pay the full amount of the tax on the whole of their shares, charging a proportionate amount against each shareholder. Foreign Banks will be called upon to pay in proportion to the extent of their operations in the Colony. Received Feb. 8,. 1.5 a.m. London, 7. In. the House of Commons last night an amendmont was proposed to the report on the Address in Reply, being in effect a motion for a vote of censure upon the Government for their policy in regard to affairs in Soudan, Five hundred sailors and marines on board the troopship Orlono have been ordered to Souakim. Government has also ordered the transport of troops from Aden to Egyptian ports' for garrison duties. In its issue this morning, the Daily News publishes a telegram from its correspondent in Upper Egypt stating that the tribes in the neighbourhood of Korosko have revolted, and that Gordon Pasha is unable to proceed farther on his journey from Korosko to Khartoum. Received Feb. 8, 10.5 p.m. London, 7. The statement that the Mediterranean Squadron had been ordered to rendezvous at Soukim is incorrect. The squadron is not about to proceed to the Red Sea, but a force of 1,200 is to be drafted from the ships under Lord John Hays, Commander, for service at Soukim, and will be despatched thither at an early date. A further force of 800 marines, now stationed at Portsmouth, is also under orders to proceed to the same destination. Sydnky, 8. The Government Bill for validating the seats of Messrs Reid, Sutton, Cohen and others, whose elections were irregular, has been laid aside, . and is to be re-introduced. Two battalions of infantry have been ordered to proceed from Aldershot to Malta and Giberalta, where they will be held in readiness for despatch to Souakim, should their services be required. Cairo, 8. Latest intelligence from Souakim states that Baker Pasha mistrusts the troops under his command at that place, and it is expected some 'regiments will be recalled to Egypt. Hong Kong, 8. News has reached here from Tonquin that an engagement has been fought between the French troops and a large body of rebels, in the provinces of Sontay, and Nambinh, when the latter were completely defeated, and dispersed, with considerable slaughter. A telegram published by the Daily News states that ' Gordon Pasha was a captive in the hands of the rebels near Eorosko. This has been authentically contradicted, and the report is stated to be without the least foundation. r Caibo, 7. Dispatches have been received from Baker Pasha stating that the disaffection among the natives in the neighbourhood of Souakim is increasing, and that the rebellion is spreading rapidly among the desert tribes. It is expected that an attack will be mad? upon Souakira, but' Baker Pasha hopes to be able to defeat the enemy with the troops at bin command. The despatches also state that in the recent battle near Tokar the Arabs lost 600 killed, besides the wounded. . ■* j
