GOLDEN- TREASURE.

Early in the week the gratifying intelligence was received of the discovery of the rf ef in the low level. The find was quite accidental. A cross-cut had been driven about 40ft west from the low level, and the reef not being met with in that distance, the driving was discontinued, in favor of an uprise to connect with the winze. This work was proceeded with for a few days, and in the meautime the ground in the cross-cut before mentioned had caved. Early in the week one of the men crawled into the drive to ascertain »the likelihood of the ground giving way further and so endangering the workings, and his surprise may be imagined on discovering the reef running parallel with the drive. The ground had merely flaked away from the reef, exposing the wall of the lode for a considerable, distance. Stops were at once taken to secure the drive and clean away the rubbish, when the reef was driven through, aud showed a thickness of fully two feet, carrying gold. Owing to the unsafe condition of the ground further work had to be discontinued until timbering is done. This is now in progress, and will be completed early in the incoming week, when a start will be made to drive along the coutse of the stone preparatory to stoping out a crushing. A tender having just been let for connecting the uprise and winze this work ,

will also proceed, so that in the course of a month or so the mine will be thoroughly opened up.
