It is notified that a panegyric on St. Patrick- will be preached by the Rev. A. Bolbwachs, in the Catholic Church, Reefton, at 7 p.m. on- Sunday nejt, being St. Patrick's Day. We publish to-day " Phoettii " popular announcement on the forthcoming A lick- . land and hristcburch races. 'Another- batch «f cancelled mining teases is announced to-day. * Seven out of every ten mining leases applied for during the <f spurt" liave. now; been either refused or cancelled " The day will no doubt come round again when every inch of the same ; ground will be re-s^pplfed, for, but in the {meantime the opponents "of lease mono- , ipblies are satiated, "Vino*: 'the Government have'baited their hooksfor another haul. I As showing the quantity of gold lost in the earlier crushing by the Company, it may be mentioned that^ from sixty to eighty ounces" of amalgam is being obtained weekly from the old tailings, and which ; now goes to add * substantial increase to ■ the weekly battery returns. The following amongst other business i was dealt with at *be last meeting of the ' Nelson Board of Education :-r-The applications of ten candidates for the hea X
iii ■■ mi i j. i. i - - mastership at Reefton were considered-, j Two of these, Mr A. Burnham-and, Mr 1 ... A. J. Newell were cttosideretd > t^gible,^ .Mr Burnham being preferred because^,; several members ofthe Board bad had the. v opportunity of personally ascertaining his y qualifications as a teacher. FourflppUca** : tionafor tlie teachership of the preparatory, school at Reefton were considered, and Miss Catherine Anderson .. was recommended aa being the only eligible candidate. A telegram was received from . the Capleston Committee dated February 7, stating that Mr Russell, who bad been appointed master,. h*ad Hot arrived although it was three weeks past his time, " The children were growing wild and the parents inconsolable." It was explained that Mr Russell had now arrived, and it was decided i»ot to pay his' salary for the time he was abseut unless he' was able tp account satisfactory for the delay. A letter was received from the Reefton t ommittee asking that additional pay might be granted to the substitute for a head master during the interrgnutn.— Resolved, That the Board agree to the temporary appointment of teachers, and will decide upon the bonus to be given when the new master is installed. An anonymous letter signed "A member of . the Committee" was received from Caples--ton, which the Board declined to have . read. ■■...,..- The Woodville Examiner, a paper published in the awke'a-Bay district, has brought in its bill f r the* redistributinn of seats at the forthcoming general election. Concerning the West Coast I representatives and constituencies, it says.: For Wellington South Hutchison will have to make way for either Fisher or Dwan, while for Te Aro Mr Shaw Will be first favourite and .should.. win, easily. Hokitika and Greymouth, having gffacetjl themselves by returning a pair of incapables at the last election, are not likely to commit the same mistake again, I shall therefore expect Watt's dry nurse, FitiGerald, to be easily defeated by Mr Raid, and that political little no-body, Petrie, replaced tyJyM'* G,tih-mess.' For Kumara, that jolly friend of the miners, Dick Seddon, is safe against, all comers. For Inangahua, Mr Shaw is not again likely to stand. His place will probably be taken by Dick Reeves, ( should the latter aot decide to stand- for the 1 Boiler. The Buller will hardly again efface itself by electing a second edition of Hunt of Waitemata and even if Jack Munro should have the hardihood to, face an optraged^ constituency, it will only '"be to find hiifuself nowhere. I will therefore expect to see either Eugene. O'Connor or Job Munson the next sitting member." . To restore nerve and brain waste, nothing equals^Hopjfßitters. Believe^ this,. ' Saa.
