Keceived March 28, 0.50 a.m. Cairo, 26. Latest telegrams from Souakim state the British troops have commenced their march towards Osman . Diane's samp in th« hill country near Taraaiiah. At noon the column had arrived midway between the latter place and Souakim, when a halt was called, four hundred men being prostrated by the intense boat and difficult nature jf the road. The advance will not be resumed until daybreak. Telegrams from Souakim state that the British troops are now returning from Tamaneb to Souakim, where the various regiments will speedily reembark for their respective stations in England and Egypt. Paris, 27. In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, Ferry announced that the Government hoped .a treaty would shortly be concluded with Madagascar, securing due protection to French subjects resident in Malagassy territoi'y. Ferqy further stated that the Government had abandoned the claim to Suzerainty over Madagascar. London, 28. Gladstone is not yet recovered from his recent illness, and is still confined within doors. The proprietors of the Melbourne Age have organised another expedi tion to proceed with the exploration of New Guinea, under the leadership of Captain Straban. The party, which consists of six men, has left here for ' New Guinea. Sydney, 28. Great distress continues to be felt in j the north-western portion of this Colony, owing to the want of rain, and frightful reports havo recently come to hand from Gunnedah districts where the long continued droughts are resulting in the destruction of immense numbers of sheep and cattle. Rumours are current here that Sir : William Jervois will receive the appointment of Governor of Victoria, and that Sir William Eobinson, Governor j of South Australia, will succeed Jerj vois in New Zealand, and Major ] General Scratchley will be appointed ; to South Australia.
