The New Zealand Sugar Company will commence operations in July or August next, and arrangements have been made for a regular supply of raw sugar from Java and China. It is expected the Company will be able to turn out between 400 and 500 tons of refined sugar per month. Gisborne, 18. It is now stated definitely here that Mr McDonald, M.H.E. will not resign his seat, but will hold it till the I general election. Dunedin, 18.
A meeting has been convened for next Wednesday to form a Historical Society of New Zealand t with a view to gather documents and l'ecords pertaining to the early history of. the Colony.
A meeting of shareholders in the Cromwell Quartz Mining Company was held to-day. This Company has paid £18,250 in dividends, since 1869, but for the last two years it has been n non-paying concern.
The adjourned meeting held to-night in regard to the formation of a proposed Constitutional lleforra Association, initiated by the Hon. W. H, Riynolds, was. attended by about twenty gentlemen; A committee, was formed to carry on the association; Messrs

At a meeting held- at Papanui tonight, called by the Reform Association, thei'e was an attendance of about 70 persons. The following resolutions were passed unanimously viz : — That the history of the Ministry has been reckless and extravagant without, any due consideration of-the true wants of the people, regardless as to what means they may have to adopt, for the purpose of maintaining themselves in power, and without a definite policy for the, future. The policy of the Government calls for the reprobation of the people, and this meeting demands that every legitimate step should be taken to ensure their spoedy expulsion from office.''
In the Supreme Cpuf, .to day Ann Eoil was charged with murdering her children William Robert and Emily Roil, on the 13th of March. The charge in connection with William Robert Roil was taken first. No fresh evidence was adduced, arid the jury hy direction of the Judge returned a verdict of •' Not Guilty," on ' the ground of insanity. The prisoner was ordered to be confined in Sunnyside till the pleasnse of the. Colonial Secretary is made known. Jn the other case aganst the unhappy woman the Crown Prosecutor, it is understood, will ask leave at Wellington to enter a nolle proxcqui.
Besides Messrs Richardson and Saunders, a third candidate will, it is said, contest the Kaiapoi seat.
At the Supreme Court yesterday, Alexander M'Rae, accused of fraudulent bankruptcy, was acquitted. Charles Rouse, convicted of robbing the mail, was sentenced to three years penal, servitude.
Wellington, 19. The writ for the Thorndon election was issued to-day.
The warrant of His Excellency the Governor for the , release of the unfortunate young woman Kate Boyle, now in gaol on a charge of child murder, has not yet arrived, "('ho recommendation of the Executive was forwarded to His Excellency some days ago.
The Hawera Star says that a reqisition has been started inviting Mr George Hutcheson to again contest Egmont with i.ajor Atkinson, and that already a great many names are attached to it."
