The Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI - WEEKLY. MONDAY, MAY 12, 1884.

A painful sensation was caused in Reefton on Saturday afternoon last by a re- - port that a miner named Matthew Juice, brother of MrG. Joice, watch-maker, had been smothered by a fall of earth iv one of the levels of the Dudley coal mine. The intelligence was very meagre, and under the belief that assistance was needed, almost every available man in the town started for the scene of the accident. It seems that Joice was engaged alone driving a new level into the mine from the hill-sido, a quarter of a mile or so from the Court House. He left for work on Saturday morning last at the usual hour, but as he did not return to dinner Mr (J. Joice walked out to the mine shortly after mid-day to see what detained him. On reaching the mouth of the tunnel he called out, and receiving no response entered the drive, and on nearing the face he was j hurrined to Bee that a fall of earth had taken place, and looking down he saw one ; if 'eceaaed's legs. He ' started immedij atoly to remove the earth from the body, ! OMiy, however, to find that the limbs were : stone cold. Assistance then arrived and j in a very short time the body of the poor ' fellow was brought out. It .was then perfectly cold, and apparently life had been extinct for some time. The body was conveyed to the morgue, there to await an inquest which will be held this morning. This is, we believe, the first mishap that has happened iv the mine, and as deceased, besides being an experienced miner, was at all times cautious and steady, it is difficult to account for the accident. Deceased was forty-six years of a^e, unmarried, and much respected. The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the Presbyterian Church, - Reef- ■ ton, will be performed to-morrow afternoon, in the presence of the officers and brethren of the the two local masonic i lodges, the Church Committee, and a large assemblage of the public. The ; masonic ceremony will be . performed by Mr D. L. Cochrane, as W.M. of the Reefton Pacific Lodge. The Church service will be performed by the Rev. Mr Gow. The building will be 48ft. x 26ft., with walls of 15ft. The front of the building will be rusticated, and the whole of the windows and doors will be of Gothic dei sign. The contractor for the erection of ; the building is Mr Edmond Cross. Yet another saw-mill for Reefton.
