A shooting party of five had assembled at Murray's hotel, and drank some whisky out of a jug in which, it is supposed, strychnine had been put, and which had not been washed out. All the party were taken with convulsions, but the others are recovering. The Honorable E. Eichardson was elected unopposed for Kaiapoi to-day. Auckland, 16. The Premier will probably address a public meeting at the Theatre Royal on Monday evening next. 17. Sir Mauice O'Rouke has received s telegram from Mr E. G. Wright, member for Ashburton, announcing his resignation. Dunedin, 16. The Medical Association have received a reply to their petition for the commutation of the sentence on Dr, Parry, convicted of manslaughter a< Kaitangata. The reply is that the Governor see no sufficient grounds to justify him in complying with the prayer thereof. Gisborne, 17. At a public meeting this morning Mr Rees absolutely refused to retire, saying any local man would have more weisht for the district in the House than Sir Julius Yogel, as it was notorious the latter only desired to gc there to prosecute his claim on the Government. It is said Sir Julius Yogel will now drop out, and the three local men carry out the contest. Nelson, 16. The Colonist correspondent, writing from Collingwood, stateß that thai district was on Wednesday visited bj the severst wind and rain storm experienced for years past. Wellington, 17. It is understood that Mr Georg€ Thorne, junr. contemplates legal proceedings for breach of contract against the Government Insurance Department, and that Messrs Buckley, Stafford, and Fitzherbert, and Mr R Stout have been retained on behalf oi the Department. The damages claimed are stated to be £5,000. U is understood that the case will come on for hearing next month, should nc unforseen difficulties arise. The Dixon-street works of the Caswell Sound Marble Company will be in full operation by the Ist of next mouth. The members of the football team, which proceed to New South Wales noxt Thursday, meet in Wellington to-morrow.
