The event took place at 5 o'clock in Princess street, opposite thr nost o!nVi>, iihe mother being on her road »o tin* hospital at the time. IV child issaifl to be doing well. The inotlur is a servant girl of about 20 years of age, and came to town from Palmerstoit last evening. Dr Martin was passing at the time and rendered assistance, and the woman was afterwards removed to the hospital. A petition is to be read at all the Roman Catholic churches on Sunday next, in order to procure signatures to it for presentation to the General Assembly, praying for an amendment of the Education Act. The Auckland Licensed Victuallers Association has been in communication with the Southern Association, with a view to agreements to a common platform, and a petition will be presented to Parliament setting forth the objection of the trade to the present Licensing Act, and asking amongst other things that th« electoral rolls of the Colony, and not the ratepayers rolls should be used in Licensing Elections. Wellington, 24. The writ for the East Coast seat was issued this morning, and has been telegraphed to Gisborne. Rumors of a painful and suspicious character have lately been in circulation in this city, and have within the last few days assumed a very definite and precise form, the name and figures in connection with some alleged improper dealing with trust fuuds by an executor being freely given. It is i said that some extraordinary disI closures are imminent.
