! A special meeting of the Little Grey j School Committee was held on the 28th j inafc. for the purpose of receiving^plans. i and Bpecifications of the proposed school, and also to consider the advisability of having it built nearer the Black water. Present : — The Chairman (McNeill junr) Mesßi-K Doig, M 'Inroe, M'Hardie, Duncan, Pendergast, and Bannon.- Proposed I by Mr Bannon, that the minutes of the previous meeting, as read be confirmed, I seconded by Mr M 'lnroe and carried. | Correspondence was then road from Stead Ellis, architect, relative to the building, which was received on the motion of Mr Doig, seconded by Mr M'Haidie. Proposed by Mr M'Hardie, that the letur \ be- not received, seconded by Mr Doig. j An amendment proposed by Mr Pender j gasfc, and seconded by Mr M 'lnroe, that ' j the letter be received, was carried by 5 to ;2. Proposed by Mr M'Hardie, and seconded by Mr Doig That the Board be again advised to shift the site of the pro- ■ j posed school about half a mile nearer to j Snowy bridge. Mr M 'lnroe proposed an amendment, seconded by Mr Pendergast. ' that the site be not shifted, which was carried by 4to 3. Division : Noes, Duncan, M 'lnroe, Pendergast, and Bannon. Ayes, M'Hardie, Doig, and M' eill. The Chairman was authorised to deal with plans &c, which were not quite com- j pleted. A vote of thanks to the chair ;. and the meeting adjourned. j To-day being Whit Monday will be ob- ' served as a holiday at the Banks, and it ' is intended, weather permitting, to play a match at foot-ball in Smith's paddock in the afternoon. Mr J. Munro, auctioneer, Westport, announces an important sale of property ; at Lyell, on to-morrow. j We publish to-day " Robin Hood's " programme on the Waterloo Cup (Christ- j church) coursing match. ! The forthcoming dramatic performance , in aid of the" funds of the Reefton Brass Band will be one of the beat efforts of the local amateurs. The piece itself is oue of sterling dramatic merit, and perhaps the worst part about it is its title, which is hardly appropriate to a piece of such deep and pathetic interest. The cast has been carefully selected, and as the play has been several weeks in rehearsal, under, the able direction of Mr W. H. Leech, we may safely count upon a good evening's entertainment on the occasion. Owing to the influx of European cablegrama at a late honr last night we are compelled to hold over our mining report. We understand that the business people will be waited upon to-day, asking them to assent to a general half holiday on Thursday in each week. The impossibility of keeping alive any kind of athletic amusement is wholly attributable to the want of such a generally recognised j off day, and we have no doubt whatever that if the request is made general it will be willing met by all the business people. The community has made a shift to acquire a suitable public recreation ground and to stimulate a spirit for athletic aport ought to be the next care. A special reporter of the Sydney Morning Herald, writing of publichouses in ■ oumea, says : Before the subject of debits "hotels," is left, something should be said with resared to the employmentof "barmaid's" in Noumea. Ab a matter of fact, in all the principal debits English barmaids are to be found. Their ! p-iHiti.m is unfortunate. Take the casse of j a girl, who, lured by some cunningly- ; worded advertisment, accepts a situation as l^rmiH in * ouwoa. She has sufficient ?wi!f7 •:•■•■■ : ; lit* 1 -- '•■> : ; :\<ir.>, »rhv>s. Bhe spends in the house will open her i eyes to the kind «if life aim will have to pass. She sees that she will have to submit to familiarities and insults that no girl of any spirit or self-respect could quietly hear, and perhaps she determines to return to Sydney ; and there are two yroat stumbling-blocks in her way, namely iu>r engagement with her employer, and the time -a week at the least, more probably than r fortnight- -before she can return l<y steamer. In the meantime her money 'filters away. If she is compelled to fulfil her engagement with her employer, she may be involved in debt or other trouble, and forced to submission. But siipp'-se the girl is not Competed to fulfil her engagement, she will find how difficult it is to live in Noumea, even for a little time, without a well-filled purse and a protector. Other occupation than that the has rejected, there is none for her ; and if her little stock of money fails before the 'opportunity for departure cornea, then "God help her." The life of a woman in New aledondia, without tinniev and without friends, is a life to be hinted at, and only thought of with a ihiHler.
