The Inangahua Times, PUBLISHED TRI- WEEKLY. MONDAY, JUNE 9, 1884.

We publish elsewhere an announcement signed by all the principal business people • in town agreeing to observe a Thursday I half holiday. The proposal to establish a co-operative store in Reefton, has, like many other spasmodic publio movements, ended in nothing, and those of the promoters who have paid the allotment call, are notified by Mr Jonathan Auld that their money will be returned less 1/- per share deducted • for expenses. The failure of the enterprise is no doubt attributable to the current 'depression, many of those who were j prominent at the time of launching the j project having subsequently found tlieniselves unable to keep to their promises. • The Reefton Rifle Company is an ac- ' complished fact, the required number «>f : volunteers having enrolled themselves to i constitute an effective corps. At tho ad- j journed meeting held on Wednesday | evening last, Mr D. It. Cochrane in the [ chair, the following officers were elected. ! Captain : Mr A. Burnhain ; Lieutenant : i Mr T. G. Sargeant ; sub-Lieutenant : | Mr F. H. Boase. A letter was read from ( the captain of the Fire Brigade offering ■' the temporary use of the Fire Brigade j hall as a drill shed, which was received I with thanks. It was decided to apply at j once to the Defence Minister for a supply of rifles and accoutrements. The meeting then adjourned. There was a very large attendance, at the annual meeting of the Reefton Jockey Club on Thursday evening last, the business being the election of the officers and stewards for the current year. Prior to the business being proceeded with a number of new members were proposed, the entrances paid, and the members admitted to vote. There were nearly forty persons present. Mr G. C. Bowman, the President of the club, occupied the chair. All the late officers of the club were re-ap-pointed ; nineteen candidates were then nominated for the office of stewards, and upon a ballot being taken the names came out in the following order ; — Connolly J. Beilby W. Shepherd G. B. Brennan P. Monteath S. Twohill P. Beeche J. B Cochrane D. L. Fraser O. Irving W. Williams W. The three last named candidates having an equal number of votes a fresh ballot for the return of one of the number was taken, when W, Williams was elected by a majority of one. Messrs Richardson and Caplcs reported having canvassed the town for subscriptions towards the purchase of the race course grounds and handed in the sum of L 3 8175, other sums having been promised. The meeting then adjourned.
