LYELL.
[from our correspondknt.]
Since my last letter nothing unusual has occurred beyond a little local excitement, caused by tho taking forcible possession of the Commercial Hotel by the incoming tenant, backed up by a well known brewer, and assisted by a gentleman of well known legal ability from Westport, who gallantly led the charge for the purpose of taking forcible possession. This was strikingly ivsented by the landlord and hia friends, who exhibited an amount of Continental courage which somewhat astonished the besiegers, who were ignomiously repulsed, one of them, the Ipgal luminary, being unceremonously pitched out, in his exit coming in contact witb a dentißt, who was innocently loosening., some of the latters molars. An altercation ensued but was happily settled out of court. The limb of the law laid information for assault and three of the delinquents wero fined 10* and n onoh. P'imnr, tho trbl tlio l;v.;d]ord had locked up ilic promi-ws
and in the eye of the law, this was considered a favorable time for a second assault which was made. A form which stood outside the Hotel, was improvised as a battering-ram and the door burst open and possession gained of the much coveted bar. Our respected Kesident Magistrate who was an unwilling spectator of some of the pi-o-ceedings, was powerless to interfere, as the law evidently recognises taking forcible possession. We are informed an amicable settlement has since been come to. The election fever is prevalent hero. <■ Both candidates held successful meetings, viz., Messrs O'Connor and Munro, and as both gentlemen are well known and are the happy possessors of previous parliamentary experience, the election is likely to be one of the closest contests which ever took place in the district. Mr O'Conor addressed the Inangahua Junction electors on the 13th inst. He was well received and a vote of confidence passed to him. Mr Munro also held a conversation at the same place, answered several questions of vital importance to the district, and said it was thro' his political exertions the Inangahua Junction bridge was built He was very well received.
