♦ ■ The following is a warning to those -of the fair sex who are contemplating matrimony : — The Supreme Court of lowa in America lately refused a divorce to a woman who knew of her Imsband's intemperate habits before marriage, on the ground that, voluntarily choosing a drunkard for a husband, she must discharge the duties of a drunkard's wife. Considerable amusement was occasioned at the Wellington R.M. Court tbe other morning. A powerful -woman was summoned as a witness. The constable administered the oath in the usual way, but was waiting for the lady to kiss the book, but she merely gazed at the orderly. " Kiss the book," said the constable, and -witness thought he said " kis-j me," and at once proceeded to put h<-r arms round the astonished constable's n**ck. •* Kiss the book," said tha constable, " not me." and she did. A correspondent sends me the following : — "Dear Civis, Theiei3ugood yarn told of Dick Seddon, the irreprps.■•sible member for Kumara, which, if I could tell it in the quaint language of my informant, would be worthy of -circulation as a 'Note, of value. It • relates to a period of Dick's history dating back some 12 years ago, wheu Dick kept a store on the Waimea, in Westland, at some little distance from -which my informant and his made had a claim ; the lattpr was a New England Yankee, a big brawny chap of nix feet three, and possessed, as most of his countrymen are, of a large fund of -dry humour. They dealt at Dick's store, as also did an adjoining claimbolder, a Canadian, also stalwart of I build. The West Coast miners were not at that time of too frugal habits, and our Canadian, living not wisely but too well, when his claim done owed Seddon a considerable ' tucker ' • account, which he was unable to pay. He made a moonlight flitting, and Dick, also a man of thews and sinews, followed him up, and as he could not get hia money he took it out by adjnirristering to the Canadian a sound fhrashiug. My frieud's Yankee mate
when he heard of this did not say much, but apparently thought a good deal, and when the storkeeper's man made his weekly delivery of' tucker,' he said — ' I say mate, next time you come bring along your bill, and bring as no more tucker' When asked for his reason — ' Well, I don't much like a man who does business in tho style your boss does. I don't like a man who comes with his bill in one hand and his shirt in the other. lam going to deal with the Dutchman, now and if I can't pay him I shan't be obliged to take any of his "sass.'' Yer see, 1 can lick him. Mebbe 1 could lick if I tried, but I know 1 can lick the Dutchman.' '' Mr Robert il.
