A TRAVELLED MAORI.
♦■ {Auckland Star.) Kiwi, the Coromandel native, who "went to America with Cole's Circus *omß four years ago returned by the mail steamer on Saturday. He had "been engaged through the Star Office -for Mr Cole, and he naturally had a desire on returning to New Zealand to •call on his journalistic friends. Kiwi left oar shores an untutored savage, *nd has come back to us a coloured gentleman of the masher type — collar and tie of faultless shape, rings, albert, -watch, and other outward tokens of ■well-to do gentility. He informs us -that although Mr Cole only agreed to give him £1 per week, when he got to America his salary was increased to 25 dollars ; indeed, it appears that Kiwi enjoyed himself thoroughly, and was well treated. He has saved 2,500d018 which speaks well for his shrewdness. At one time during hia travels the troupe of •• naked savages from uncivilised New Zealand," as the Circus bills expressed it, consisted of our friend and six Mexican Indians, and it was part of Kiwi's duty to paint the Jaces of his fellow- exhibits and initiate them into the myßteries of the Maori haka. He says the Indiana are fine people, and lie considers that in many of their habits and ideas they are before the Maoris During his pregrinations Kiwi visited New • York, Boston, Washington, Baltimore, Ciucinnatti, New Orleans, Minneapolis, and most of the other l*rge American cities, and subsequently tonred through Canada. While in Washington he had an interview with President Arthur— Herbert Blade, the half-caste acting as interpreter. He %v very much impressed with the Palls , of ' Niagara, where the water came " baeremai kikoui, and, by jingo, sir, ' ifc made a debbil of a row." Kiwi sayß he has had enough travelling about, and he intends going back to hia old kaiu.Qf at Kennedy's B^y. where no dpubh, he will enliven his fellow tribesmen of the Ngatipouri,
