The tenders for the mail services affecting this district have at length been cbalt with by the postal authorities. The
teiidurnf Mossi'3 Mitchell and Campbell for a tri-weekly survice between Greyu;outh iind Reefton and all inturmudiate places has been adopted. The contract fora triweekly survice betwoen Nelson and Reeftoii and Roefton and Westpurt his been secured by Newman Bros. The only alteration made in these services is that Ruefti-u, instead of Lyell, is made the terminus <>f the Nelson -llenf ton servicu, the through journey to Nelson lining;, thus shortened by one. day. We understand that petitions were on Saturday last lodged against the Reefton. Murray and Crushington elections of the County, and the 3rd December has been tiXH.I for the hearing "f eauh. It is also s id that Mr M'Grettgor the defeated candilate, will petition against the election in the Hanipden Riding. Mr Wnrden Keddell, Dunstan, Otago, will succeed Mr Warden Revell in the judicial charge of tho luan^ahiM and Westport districts. Mr Keddell will not enter upon his official duties before I January next. A correspondent writes to us enquiring when the State School pic-uic is to be held, au^tre.'itiuLf that it should either be held during the Christinas holidays or postponed until February or March, say on the day before the school resumes. So far as we are aware the date of the gathering has not been definitely fixed, although the 22nd December has been suggested .as a convenient one. The reason for not holding the pic-nic during tlie ho] Hays is that, the teachers will, in all probability, be absent from Reefton at that time. The suggestion of our correspondent that February or March should be selected is perhaps worthy of consideration. It is intended to hold a bazaar during the St. Patrick's holidays in aid of the fund for the erection of a new presbytery in connection with the Catholic chuch, Reeftou. A committee of ladies has been j appointed to prepare for the occasion. Mr J. Ring the well known photographic artist of Greymouth will visit Reeftou during the week, but his stay will, we believe, be very short, as it isj not unlikely he will pay a visit to Cannibal Gorge for the purpose of taking views of the magnificent, scenery thereabouts. The scenery of the Goige is said to be of unsurpassed beauty. The want of water for mining purposes is now being generally r\!t throughout the j field, and v ii^as rain •.■.f.u.js quicklj' several of the '.-.iM^ries will be brought to a stand still Tho District Court will sit during the week, when a number of applications for rectification of the register of the Liinkey Creak Campa-iy (in liquidation) Will be dealt with. There arc no criminal cases for hearing. Owing to Wednesday night next being the monthly lodge night of the Oddfellows, the Hall will be engaged, and Mr Menteith, M.H.R.. ha? therefore been compelled to post-none his a .l dross to the electors until Fri iay next. i j Tije release of the Ticliborno claimant is accountable for the publication at this rather late period of s ine fresh evidence relating to that celebrated trial. S"rnd three or four years ago the Defence Department of this colony removed to Invercargill from Mount ook Barracks, Wellington, a num h-.v of shot an I cartridge caae3, some of which bore the name of the ship Oaprey, and dates varying from 1814 to 1830. Very little notice appears to have been paid to tha circumstance at the time, and it was soon lo3t sight of. Receutly, however, the department has been removing a nu.nber of other aininuinti n\ cassus from old stores in the brick store which has just been completed, and in this process tiie mea have come across some ad liiioual cases marked "Transport Osprey," dated variously 1844, 1846, 1854 and 185G, and bearing the names of destination " For Melbourne," "For Hobart Town," "For Sydney." These facts tend to prove i>eyoud doubt that between 1844 and 1856 a «hip namad Osproy did trade to Australia, and it will be remembered that during the progiess of the Tich borne trial the claimant stated that on the loss of the Bella he was picked up off the South American coast by a vessel called the Osprey, bound for Melbourne. Enquires re .suited in the discovery that tharj was no record of any such shin having vi.sited Port Phillip, the only (Xiprey known there being a schooner that plied between Melbourne and Geelong. The ammunition cases in question were brought to New Zealand from the sister colonies at the time of the Maori war, and have remained packed in the Mount Cook Barracks ever since. Tn " Robin Hood's " programme on the M.db turne and New Zealand Cups, the first prizj in the New Zealand Cup, value £t73 net cash, was drawn by a brewer in Chri*tchureh ; second, £101, by a waiter at, one <>f thu loading hotels ; and the third, value t'so, by a min^r at Kanoiri, Wcslland. Wo learn from the Me?hovfnc Argus that the telegram announcing tho result of t^io racu for the Goodwood Cup occupied only erne hour and iifty-tliree un.iutes
in transmission from London to Melbourne, a distance, as the wires go. of about 14,000 miles. This despatch went by Indo-European Company's lino across the Continent, through Asia Mmn 1 an I Persia, to Bombay, where it was trans-
furred to the Eastern Telegraph Company's line, mill thence proceelel to Madras, Singapore, and across the Australian continent to Melbourne. It woul 1 have to be received and retransmitted between twenty anl thirty ti.n^3. Tt left

The previous " l>est mi record" was the telegraphing of the result of the first HanlanTrickett race for the acquatic championship, which went from L-widon to Melbourne in two hours.
At tho Resident Magistrate Court, Milton, on Wednesday, tho case of Moft'att v. Dr Sinclair, dentist, was tried. It was a claim for £2(5, damages .sustained hy the plaintiff's wife through the defendant's malpractice. The evidence showe l that the defendant attempted to pull five teeth, aiM four of them were broken off in the jaw. Upon remonstrating afterwards, Dr Sinclair said that the teeth were all right, and that Mrs Mo2'.it only felt the ji.vb>;ie. HiiV'lmitted there was one stump left, but took no steps to extract it, and ordered Moft'art and his wife out of the place. Mrs Moffac ha I been in bed ever si noe. Dr Low, of Kaitangata, gave evidence for the plaintiff that the gums were very much torn and bleeding. Three teutli were broken oJ to the stumps. There was evidence of unskilful practice. Judgment was given for £10 Gi, and costs £5 17a. Execution, whijh was applied for, was stayed for three days, to give defendant an opportunity of applying for a re hearing. A similar case was partly heard in Dunedin on Wednesday, but was adjourned till the 2Gth inst.
