An influential meeting re the West , Coast railway was held here this | evening, when it was decided to under* j take preliminary arrangements for constructing the- line, and a committee was appointed to take, the necessary steps. The meeting was private, and the details have not yet transpired. Mr E. Wakefield M.H.R., addressed a crowded meeting in the Leeston Town Hall last night, speaking for two j hours and a half, though at first he i was coldly received and even hissed he I carried the meeting with him and was accorded a vote of confidence by a ve.ry large majority. Duvedin, 1. To-nigh ts Herald says : It is rumored that the Hon Mr Stout intends to bring an action against the leading Dunedin newspaper for alleged libel in a leading article recently published.
