REEFTON STATE SCHOOL;

A meeting of the Reefton School Committee was held on Thursday evening la-<t, Dec. 18th, 1884.

Present: Mr. Patterson (chair), Messrs Banks, Blight, Shepherd and Preshaw.

The minutes of previous meetings Were read and confirmed.

A letter from Mr Gardner was read, also a memo, from S. Ellis, stating that £10 had been passed for three new desks, Tlie Inspectors report was then read. Proposed l>y Mr Blight, seconded l»y Mi 1 Shepherd and carried, that the correspondence he received. Kesolved that the Committee decline to re-open the subject matter contained in his letter of PTovuinber last. Resolved, that the Treasurer and Secretary \>n empowered to provide the desks. The Inspectors report as below was adopted. Ref.fto.v. Head Master, Mr Burnham, assistants Mr Hopkins, Miss Moller, Miss Anderson, and a probationer. Present : 240 ;on the roll, 253. Before the arrival of the present Headmaster six months ago, this school, owing to the inadequacy of the teaching staff to i overcrowding, aud to other causes, had i fallen into a very unpromising condition. Discipline, has aince been fully restored, i the whole school has been re-organised, ! and a marked improvement has been effected in the style of teaching. The numerous scholars who took up the First ; and Second Standards acquitted themselves well, those who attempted the Third doing fairly ; while no such results i have hitherto been approached in Reef ton ' as those obtained by the scholars in the two upper classes under the immediate charge of the head-master. No less than . 1G of these pupils attempted aud passed I the Sixth Standard. The arithmetic of these classes was at least equal to that of last year, their spelling, writing and graminer being far better. The. Fourth Standard scholars were the only ones who did badly, nearly half of them failing to pass, their arithmetic and handwriting were especially faulty. Record of passes and failures : — Standard.
