At the rfasby Police Court last week the licensee of the Royal Hotel was charged with permitting gambling on Sunday morning in the shape of a game of cards known as *' poker." The evidence clearly proved that such a game had been played — indeed it was admitted ; but the counsel for the defence quoted the decision of Judge Johnstone in the appeal case, Glasson v. Whitty, and the Magistrate, in accordance therewith, held it not to have been proved that " poker " was an unlawful game. The decision will be interesting to lovers of the innocent game of whom there are not a few in New Zealand. Remenyi, the great, violinist caused a groat furore in Sydney at the Opera Bouse. A ftei playing a great solo, one of the audience called out for the " Marsellaise." Remenyi played it amidst great applause. Then he played " Scots wha, hae," which caured another furore, and ended in playing " Rule Brittania " and " God save the Queen." This was the culminating point, as it roused the audience to such a state of enthusiasm that they rose en masse, the ladies waving their handkerchiefs, iuulthegcntluuien cheering luttti'.y.
