COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION.
The polling for the retu'-n of two members to represent the Riding of Reefton in the loc\l Council opened at 9am on Monday morning last. The weather was very unpleasant, but in no way damped th« ardour of the friends of the different candidates. A gresfr many people took the precaution to record their votes early in the day, and it was well that they did so, otherwise probably there would have been a block out, the poll closed at 6 p.m. and the result was declared at 8 p.m., the numbers being as follows :■ — Brennan ... 257 Monteath 210 Campbell 20G Patterson X99 Messrs Brennan and Menteath were therefore elected. The following 'Ist shows the manner in which the votes of each side wore divided. Brennan and Patterson 100 Monteath and Campbell 182 Brennau and Menteath 12 Brummn and Campbell 11 Menteath and Patterson 3 Menteath and Culling* 2 Campbell and Patterson 1 Collinga and Patterson 1 I 402 Informal votes 10 c Plumpers 57 Grand total 4G9 A further examination of the voting shows that 96 persons voted who were not residents of the Keefton Biding being chiefly ininws right holders from Boatinaiiß and Cnishington Hidings, tho rights having bmi taken out for the most part after 1 p.m. the day of the poll. Th« contest was a rninarkably keen one, as shown by the fuct that a number pi miners rights had been ! taken cut for women, who attended the ■ booth and voted npon that qualification.
