HONOUR IS NIL.
(TO THE EDITOR J.NAXOAHUA TIMES. Sir. — Although betting is not by law recognised, nor bets lost and won recoverable by legal process, yet amongst alt clauses such is considered and acknowledged as debts of honour, and as ouch are promptly paid by all honourable men. Therefore, we must conclude that men who make bets and lose, and re pu liate tht-ir responsibility on the plea of illegality, are men utterly devoid of honour. I am nor a betting man myself, but I was challenged to acc-pt a bet of £5 upon the issue of a certain event. I declined to bet t's, but oflfere Ito bet a new hat, value 10/ which was readily ac-epted in the presence of seveial witnesses. The challenger lost the bet. but repu liates the bet on the ground tha* buts cannot be recovered at law. So much for the honour and dignity of some of our Reefton betting u>en. Yours &c, Old Hat. Reefton. January lOrli, 1885.
