The Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. MONDAY, MARCH 9, 1885.

Professor Black has kindly consented to deliver a lecture in the Oddfellow's Hail on Wednesday evening next, in aid of the building fund of Knox Church. Owing to the length of our Court report the letters of " Ad Valorem," "An Elector," and "Query," are crowded out, as also reports of Professor Black's lectures, and other important matters, all which will, however, receive due attention in succeeding issues. The election petition case was advanced an important stage in the Magistrate's Court on Friday and Saturday last. The evidence of two additional voters was tak«n and conclusive testimony having been given by the police that the remaining witnesses wanted were still evading service. Mr Junes obtained permission to re-call Mr Rooney, mine manager of the Welcome, who proved that most of the absentees were working in the Welcome mine up to the 21st of February last, (a day after the last sitting of the Court), and also that they lived in Boatman's, and worked in the mine, both before and after the election. Similar evidence was obtained from Mr M' Quillan, in relation to the three remaining absent witnesses, upon which His Worship ordered a scrutiny of the votes, which having been made established the fact that everyone of the persons alleged in the petition and who voted for the candidate petitioned against, the great majority of them being plumpers. In. one case only was there a division between Brennan and Campbell the remainder being either plumpers for Mr Brennan or divides with Mr Patterson. W one of the votes were recorded for Mr Menteath. The question of the identification of the boundaries of the Ridings was also settled and the case for the petitioner* closed. The respondents then applied for an adjournment to enable them to produce the ten witnesses who have hitherto kept out of the. The respondents have undertaken tooall no other witnesses beyond the ten in question, and as they are to be examined only as to their residence before and after the 29th December the case will be closed at the next hearing. The Court did no rise until nearly 11 pm. on Saturday and up to the last the Uourt house was crowded to i the utmost extent.
