Hostile Arabs made an a. tack today on a convoy which was proceeding to the zaraba which had been formed on the road to Taimai. The attack was repulsed by the British troops, the enemy lotting a hundred men. The ouly casualties on the English side were three wounded. The telegram also states that the work on H.M.S. Nelson, now tc dock, will proceed throughout to-night go as to get her ready for tea without delay. This evening tho World announced that 1 1 .M.S. Nelson had been ordered to Sydney to he in readiness for emergency. The same paper ataies that enquiries made eoufhm the belief that unusual activity is manifest in the \ naval and military departments. Beach and Edward Hanlan, for £500 aside and the championship of the world took plaice to-day over the usual course ou tlie Parramatta Riven The morning was dull, with light rain falling, but towards noon the weather cleared, aud at starting time it was fine. Tbe water was smooth, and every point of vantage was thronged with eager spectators. The steamers were crowded to their utmost capacity, and the greatest interest was manifested by the immense assemblage. Both me a were iv splendid condition.
Hanfaa rowed in his new "Ruddick" boat. The men got well away, and for the first mile the pace was terrific, lioth being well stogetlier. Then Beach gradually, but surely, drew : ahead, until he was a boat's length in front of Hanlan, who from that time was out of it. The New South Wales man increased his lead, and at Putney had a length to the good, the Canadian being in difficulties. Beach was still fresh and polling strong. Passing Gladersvillc it was patent to all that the race was virtually over. Beach won as he liked and came in six lengths ahead of his opponent amidst a perfect storm of shouts and most intense excitement. Time 28mins. 56»eca.
