THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP
(Per Tarawera atßluff.) Sydney, March 81. The city was in a state of excitement over the boat race on Saturday last between Beach and Haitian. Haitian for the past week has been the favorite, but Beach has been well supported, and- en Saturday was backed at even money. As the. competitors passed alongside the Steamer Hanlan appeared as fit as -possible; but everyone noticed he wore an an x inns' look. Beach looked very self confident, and smiled pleasantly, The tide had been at flood two hodrs, so it was against the sculleis. Beach won the toss and elected to row on the south side, though that gave little or no advantage. Before 100 yards were covered Beach took the lead, 'but •Hanlan, who was expected to make an attempt to get the l*ad failed to do so, as he rowed in a faint-hearted way. As this fact became evident tht»re< was a lond shout " Hmilou's gone." It was seen that Beach was adopting Haitian's old tractics of forcing the pace at the start, but' he seined to have it nil his own way, for Hanlan did not raw as was his wont aud splashed a good deal now and then. As- Bench pulled down the course the chewing wax tremendous and the noise quite deafening. The excitement in Sydney last night was intense.
