MODERN PROCESSES OF GOLD EXTRACTION.

A paper wax read before the Balloon Society recently by Dr Bowlan Atcherl«y, describing; two new inventions which promise largely to red ace the loss from gold nuextracted from the tniiiHralg manipulated, which is estiI mated to amount to no less than twelve millions sterling annually. Dr Atcherle) introduced, first an improved mercury amalgamating machine of his own, by which he largely increases the yi*ld of gold, saving almost all the "float "or "flower" gold, hitherto last under the best processes, A still more important process was next treated of, the invention of Mr Henry R. Cassel, »f New York. By a very ingenious application of electricity and quicklime and common salt, the most rebellious of auriferous ores are compelled to yield op their whole chaige of precious a metel, the rate of production, as proved by exhaustive tests made in London during- the past few weeks by Mr Cassel, hemp about one ton of ore per hour for one small dynamo machine. The certified cost amounts to but a few shillings per ton while the value of the gold gained averagers 95 per cent, of all that the ore contains. A strong syndicate containing the heads of some of the great est firms in Saptland has already purchased the patent rights of Mr Cassel I and in a brief period it is proposed to set up a limited company with a large capital to carry out the process on the largest scale. The paper was followed by a discussion. There was a general consensus of opinion that both inventions were of the hightett value, and a resolution was unanimously passed declaring thorn worthy support.
