Lately Urn per mission has been withheld, and this has caused greit discontent. The prisoners refused to receive food or enter their colls, but expressed their willingness to work. As many ©f the prisoners were engaged on work which necessitates their being provided with pickaxes, crowbars, shovels, »r other instruments which might be used as j weapons, the superintendent refused to j allow th»m to work. Next day they were still insubordinate, and refused to enter the cells. Th« troops and police entered the, gaol. s>ut no sooner had the prisoners seen them than they let loo?e a perfect ! storm of b"ickbats and stones. The j troops, whe wer<* hampered by the narrowness ef the (gateway, at first gave way, but recovering they fired o» the prisoners, killing 11 and wounding I 31. In about 10 minutes the outbreak was at an end. Several warders were severely injnred, and some of the prisoners who wished to accept food received severe contusions at the hands of their fellow prisoners.
