There was a fair master ef footballers at the match on Saturday last and the play was very .keen on both sides. The number ef all-comers was not sufficient to pit against the club, so a scratch match was played, and at the conclusion the subject of the forthcoming contest with the Greymouth Club was, discussed, when the following team was selected to represent Reefton on the occasion : Messrs North, Blakley, Robinson, Durbridge, St. George,' Campbell, Bullard, Butler, Mirfin, M'Kay, Naßh, M-Dowall, Balraei-, White, M'Mynn and Lee. ■"- Trierewaea capital house in the Oddfellow's Hall on Friday evening last, on the occasion of the complimentary benefit tendered fo Mrs F. M. Willmott. The performance passed off very successfully. Or. Saturday evening the company played " Zoe the Octoroon " The attendance was moderately goad. At tbe fall of the curtain Mr vVUimott announced that by special desire he would give one more performance in Reeftou on Monday (this) evening, when Boucctcault'B world-renowned drama ef the " Shaiighraun " would be produced. This would be the last performance of his series, and it was intended te have a dance at the close of the performance, to mark tba'close ef his season in Reefton. It is unnecessary for us to say a .word in praise of the •• Shaughraun." As a dramatic production next perhaps to " London Assurance " it is|admitted to be the author's masterpiece, and vre are confident that Mr Willmett's enterprise in placing it before a Reeften audience will be amply rewarded. Mr A. S. Menteath M.H.R, notifies that he will address the electors during the present week as follows : Maonlight — Wednesday; Ahaura— Thursday j Orwell Ureek— Friday, and Granville and Totara Flat (at Totara Flat) on Saturday. Owing to pressure upon our columns correspondents letters, and other local matters are crowded out of our present issue. In the Magistrate's Court on Fridayevening just before the hour of adjournment His Worship announced that although he had deferred his decision for a 'fortnight in the case of Plaskett v. Williams, if it weuld be more convenient for all parties, he was prepared to deliver judgment at once, if counsel on either side desired. Mr Menteath, for plaintiff, and Mr Guinness, for defendant, were desirous that judgment should be delivered at ones. Accordingly when the Court resumed at 7 p.m. His Worship proceeded to deliver judgment. He said the whole spirit of the law was against those holding public positions taking part ia the discussion of, er voting upon matters in which they had a personal interest. That principle was of almost general application. The Counties Act provided in the case of travelling expenses an ex caption to the rule, but the exception was specific, and clearly limited the authority te that one purpose, otherwise the penalty and the disqualification clause weald have been unnecessary. As to whether the defendant acted "knowingly" it must be taken that he so acted. He had been a Councillor since 1879, and the plea of ignorance was therefore inadmissible. Defendant had not only given an original but also a casting vote in favor of a motion awarding himself a salary of L2OO psr annum, and this after having taken part in ' the discussion of the motion. In thus acting defendant had • clearly rendered himself liable, and his seat in the Council for the Riding of An ton ion must be declared vacant, and a fine of rive guineas and costs would be inflicted.
