« From Johnston and Walking* surveyors, re County map, and stating it would be an injury to private surveyors to have a County map prepared by the Government. They were prepared to finish a map such as that required at a reasonable price. Ftom the Chief Surveyor expressing his willingness to supervise the preparation of a Connty map, provided the Council j>aid the cost, and asking for further particulars. From P. Mulvay, requesting that th* name of Charles Bowater be substituted for his in respect of .property at Bkck's Point. From M. Levy requesting thai P. N. Shepherd's name be inserted on the Benften valuation roll in lien of his in rpspect of section in Broadway. From P. M'Geady applying similarly in respect of agricultural section at Antonio's. From Property T«x Commissioner requesting that facilities be afforded to valuers \o make the next assessment, also requesting certain information re County revenue. From P. Dunn, calling attention to j the approacbes to bis section* in i Bridge street From D. Young calling attention to extra maintenance necessary on his contract in consequence of the work going on for widening the read, and asking £40 additional. From M. Smith and Farqohar, asking for a fortnight's extension ef time •n contract at Larry's Creek. From J Gannon, applying for a free license for hotel on the Left hand branch, short track. From W. Banks, on behalf of the Committee of the Presbyterian Cbarch, calling attention to the state of Broadway, near the Church. From A. J. Breen re his claim for compensation and requesting a reconsideration «f bis application. From J. {Pollock re order against Molloyand others. From the Connty Solicitor reiterating the opinion already given re Connolly and Breen's applications for compensation, also stating that tbe Local Option poll could he validated by the GoTeraneat. This being the whole of the correspondence, it was received as read. From a n amber of inhabitants of Boatman's petitioning that tbe road to the coal mine there be repaired. Cr. Craig moved, Cr. M'Ginley seconded, and it was carried that the petition as read be received. Engineer's Report. The Engineer reported that in view of the number of applications being made for connection with the Broadway water main, a uniform system should be adopted. Also calling attention to tbe fact that the maintenance contracts would shortly expire. The next business was the appoint ment of Chairman. Cr. Irving proposed and Cr. Campbell seconded that Cr. Twohiil be Chairman of the County. Cr. Campbell moved as an amend* ment that Cr. Mentoath be elected County Chairman. This was seconded by Cr. Irving. The temporary Chairman then pnt amendment which was earned on the voices, all the Councillors sapporting it with the exception of Cr. Twohiil. The temporary Chairman than invited further amendments, and after the lapse of a minnte or two, Cr. M'Cinley moved that Cr. Craig he elected County Chairman, and this was seconded Uy Cr. Twohill, bat Cr. Craig declined to stand. There being no further propositions the amendment was again pnt as an original motion, and again carried on the voices, all the members as before supporting it with the exception of Cr. ! Twohiil. On the motion of Cr. Craig tbe Council then adjourned for a quarter of an hour. The Council resumed at 9 p.m. when the ordinary business was resumed. The applications of J. Stevenson and A. Kater, for permission to connect their premises with tli« Broadway water main were acceeded to. Be the application of J. Brazil for compensatiou. On the motion of Cr. M'Gialey the matter was referred to the Engineer to report. j Cr. Irving said the application came under the same heading as those of Connolly and Breen, and the Council j had no power to accede to the request. With reference to tbe letter from the Chairman of the Bnller Comity re tollages on the Westport-Bwfton road. Cr. M'Ginley pointed out that the Buller County subsidies the pant, | and half fees only were charged. Cr. Lynch said there was no redaction in the punt fees at the LyelL He thonght it would be better for the Inangahua County to hay all the punts and put men on to work them. After some discussion Cr. M'Ginley moved that the Clerk communicate with Mr Archer, of the Landing, inquiring what he would sell or lease the pnnt for. The motion was seconded by Cr. Lynch and carried. Resolved that the letter of J. Hunter, Hampden, stand over for further enquiry. Be the application of Mr Banks. Cr. Irving said there was this difficulty that if the Councilcomraenced making the footpaths in one place they would have to make the work general. Cr. Craig said it was usual to accede to small requests of this kind, and he would therefore move thai it be complied with. Seconded by Cr. Campbell and carried. Discussion was resumed upon A. J. Breen's application for £7 10s compensation. In reply to the Chairman the County Engineer s»id that the portion of road made by Breeit was carried out equally as well as the portion now being made by contract The Chairman said the application stood upon a different footing to some of the claims sent in to the Council The work had been performed before the tendering for the widening of the road bad been invited, and the Council therefore got the contract executed by so much less money. Cr. Ciaig failed to see any difference between Breen's aud Walsh's applications. The latter had kepi a main road open and it seemed to him that one was as good as the other. Cr. Twohill moved that the application of Breen be granted. Cr. Lynch seconded the motion to have it decided one way or the other. Cr, Irving said they already had thd '
County Solicitor's •piaien that saeh payments were illegal, and h* cduld not see how the Council coald fly in the face of the solicitor's opinion. The Chairmaa said he vu inclined to take an opposite view «?i thegroand that the ' ounctl bad benefitted by the work done by Breen. But for esattftency sake he most kold with Cr. Irvine's view on the matter. It was oTentaally decided to hold over dealing with the matter till neit meeting. With reference to the potitioa of Boatman's residents re repairs; to road to the coal same :here, it was Moved by Cr. M'Gintey, seconded by Cr. Twohill, that specifications b* propared of the work, and an eWmiaU prepared. The motioa was pot and carried. Re the application of J. Gannon for free license for ferrying at the Lefthand Branch. Cr. Twohill said the applicant was doing very little business, aad in older to keep the ferry open it was advisable to make him some concession. In reply to a question the dork said R Wolfe received *1 per weeir >for keepiug the ferry at Fern flat Cr. Campbell tboßght J. Qanaoa : was better entitled to coosidoration than Wolfe. - - All the councillors expressed thorn selves favourable to some grant being made. Cr. CampHoll moved, and Cr. Ora% seconded r that a grant of £5 annually be made to J. Gannon, in consideration of services rendered in ferrying, passengers. The motion was then pat* and" carried.
