The attendance at the Oddfellows Hall on Saturday was not so large as might have been expected, but the •nteclaininent was thoroughly enjoyed. Mr Teece is a geod elocutionist, and well worth listening to. An edtirely new program—me will be presented this evening, when Mr Teece's friends will no doubt give him a bumper house. The following are the battery returns fur the past week ; — Keep-it-Dark, 4340z amalgam ; lnkerman, 4350z *f amalgam ; Welcome, 2t>soa of amalgam. Th« Nelson .T/tvVaaya : — "After nearly two months of anxiety and suspense those of our readers who are interested in the completion of railway communication betweep Nelson, the West Coast, and the South of Island- -and who is not ?— will be delighted to hear that at last there is a chance of the hopes of the people in this direction being gratified. It was, if we remember right, about the 220 d April that the last cablegram was received f rom Mr Fell, in which it was stated that the delegates had every reason to be satisfied with the reception accorded to their proposal by influential men in London, but that owing to the general uncertainty and uueasiuess iv consequence of the possibility of war, they were unable to do any real business. As the rumors of war died away llicir chances of success have gone up, and we vow hava the greatest pleasure in publishing a Press Association telegram received this afternoon from Cbristehuieh, -from which it will be seen that their prospects are hopeful and that they expect, within a week, to be able to state that their mission has been successful. The telegram is as follows :— " Mr C. C. Eowen this^ morning received a cablegram from the East and West Coast Railway delegates in London to the eftVt that their prospects are botiefuJ, and that they will probably be able to send a definite answer in about a week." We heartily congratulate the residents in Nelson, and especially those who have devoted their time and money ; to the promotion of the scheme, on the hopeful tone of the foregoing telegram. We shall not be surprised to learn within a day or two that the Government have received still fuller information relative to the matter, as the assurance of the success or otherwise of the proposals roust affect the Statements of boih ihe Colonial Treasurer and Minister for public Works, who will doubtless take care to obtain from London all the information available. -'■ - Qu^et. nerve a>d bplroy sleep in Hop Hitlers, for sleepless ladies and invalids.
