The House met this afternoon, bat the business was unimportant Mr Stout, Minister of Education, has postponed until to m'onvw his proj mised statement- re Education matters. To-night's sitting will be occupied with business of no special importance. To-morrow the Government will submit their amended tariff proposals. A deputation of members favorable to tbe Government waited upon the Premier to-day to urge upon him tbe desirableness of dropping the proposed increase in the tariff. The Premier said the Cabinet had been sitting all day yesterday upon the question, -and 4iad agreed to remodel the tariff, striking out all the items er cept those tor revenue^rarsmg purposes. Tariff Bill under these circumstances. * The Nelson and West Coast members held a meeting yesterday, to consider the proposal.*) .under the Local Bodies Finance Act Powers Bill. It was resolved that amendments be introduced when the bill is in Committee to the following eflect:— 1. That the County Chairman should be elected triennial ly, in place of annually as at present, the first term to be for two years, in order that the succeeding elections may take place on the same date as the elections' for County Councils. (2). That restrictions be made to the borrowing powers of Councils. (3). That Councils \*e empowered to levy the same rate on orown lands as at present, namely | three half-pence in the £, in hen of three farthings, proposed by the bill. (*4). That the eleven goldfields counties between whom the proposed subsidies to amount to £2,000 each per annum be allotted an amount on the basis of the gold exported from each" county during the proceeding three years. | All the goldfields representatives signed a round robin to-day to the Minister of Mines, asking that __0,000 be placed on the Supplementary Estimates for water supplies and other works on goldfields, tending to develope the mining industry. The usual sessional' ball given by Ministers was held last nigßfc, and was a brilliant success. Some 800 people attended, including His Excellency the Governor, the whole of the Ministry and a large number of members. Wm. Wiring Taylor, convicted last criminal session for misdemeanour, appeared before tbe Chief Justice today, and was sentenced to five years penal servitude. At a meeting wf the burgesses of Sydnham held last night a resolution was passed condemning the GovernI ment proposals contained in tbe Local j Bodies and Finance and Powers Bill and Hospital and Charitable Bill. The chief grounds of objection taken at the meeting were that while boroughs are expected to contribute rates on population basis subsidies are granted on the basis of the annual income.
