There has been an active inquiry for several days past for Venus shares, which have taken up a very firm position in the market very few holders being disposed to part. Mr C. Fraser still remains in a very : precarious condition, but his friends we • are glad to say have still hope of his recovery. The Reefton reservoir has been completely frozen over with ice being quite an inch thick. There was some fear that the main from Broadway to the reservoir, being exposed in floods, would become blocked with ice so as to prevent the flow ! of the water, but this fear has not so far been realised. m Our attention has been called to an inaccuracy in our report of the case of Dunn v. National Bank, heard in the District Court on Saturday last. The j judgment given was for £19 6s 6d and j not Jf24 6s 6d, as stated. The costs were divided as follows : defendants to pay court expenses and counsels fee and plaintiff to pay the cost of jurors, the Court being of opinion that jurors ought not to have been suramonedjin such a case. In the Disirict Court on Saturday last, in the course of the hearing of a petition for the adjournment of bankruptcy proceedings in consequence of the absence of a bankrupt. His Honor remarked that the Court had power to punish an absent bankrupt by annulling the bankruptcy, and thus withdraw the protection of the Court from him. Such a punishment could be inflicted^upon a bankrupt who wilfully kept out of the way in order to evade examination and it was'as well that the fact should be known. Mr W. Cummins, secretary of the Reefon Mining Institute, received a letter from Professor Black on Monday last, announcing that the order for the chemicals and apparatus for the Institute had been forwarded to London, and stating that the material would reach Reefton in about October next. It may : be mentioned tbat the order embraces j every requisite for continuing the form of instruction initiated here by Professor Black. We understand that Dr. Thorpe has secured a practice at Lyttelton, for which place be will leave in the beginning of next week. It will be seen that the whole of Dr. Thorpe's household furniture and effects will be submitted to public auction on Saturday next, the sale commencing at 1 o'clock sharp. The Post myn :— William Waring Taylor left Wellington in tbe Mawhera for Hokitika, in custody of Mr Cleary, the Governor of the Hokitika Gaol, who came to Wellington for the purpose of taking charge of the prisoner. It is intended tbat he shall serve his sentence, which, if he behaves well, will only extend for three years and two months, in the Hokitika Gaol. In his convict garb, and with close cropped hair, beard, and moustache, Taylor was scarcely recognisable. A Parliamentary telegram to the Tuapek a Timos says : ' ' A strong party is now being formed from both sidos of tlm House, favourable to extentinn of pow«ro ; to local governing bodies, substitution ofa J land tax for the property tax. and yivjng : substantial encouragement to loci] in j dustrics. At n muo-ting of the GolduehU : Committee thr; iui!ir.tiiii of miners' rights , was lost by V.w vot-.j of the chairman. Mr \ Pyke has agreed to the annual rent of

mining leases being reduced below £2 per J acre. The session will be through by the J end of next month." The trouble between the Kumara Hos- ; pital Committee and Dr Monckton has intensified since the doctor obtained judgment against the committee. A public subscription is being made to defray the costs of an appeal. , Mr Justice Richmond's latest dictum is tbat governments, corporations, or companies who accept the '* lowest tetider" deserve to suffer for such a " wretched, rotten system." Thomas Boyd, the first white roan who crossed the Murray, and the last surviving member of Hume and Howell's exploration party, died at Nomalig*town (NS. W.) He was once a prosperous grazier, but through misfortune lost everything, aud died in extreme poverty. He was in receipt of a small pension from the New South Wales Government, but the Victorian Government treated him shabbily, having ne«lected to pay tbe gratuity promised bim on the occasion of the demonstration at Albury, when through railway communication was established. The Licensing Bill introduced into tbe Victorian Assembly by Mr Berry provides tbat the Colony shall be divided into licensing districts, the licensed houses to | be in proportion to the population, tbe maximum being one house for every 250 persons up to 1000, and then one for every 500. Special courts are to be appointed by Government to have entire control over licensed houses ; one-fifth of the ratepayers in any district to be entitled to demand a 1-aIM to decide whether or I not to reduce tha number of licensed j houses. It is expected that the present number of licensed houses will ba reduced from 4200 to 2000 after tbe Act passes. The bill further provides that a license shall be forfeit<y.l if a house is purchased by a brewer n»»«l spirit merchant Present barmaids are to K» allowed to retain their occupation, but tb'.'re must be no fresh appointments. No drink must be sold to children under 16. All fees and fines are to be paid into a general fund, out of which compensation is to be paid for compulsory closing of houses. Sunday trading is to be prohibited. We (Post) helieve it is not generally known that an Australian football team is to pay a visit to Great Britain towards the end of the present year. The players are to be selected from the clubmen in New South Wales', Victoria, and Queensland, aud a committee of four has been appointed to visit each of those colonies and report as to the most suitable men. Tn order to increase tbe interest in the matches whioh will be played at HomA the team will include two or three aboriginals. The idea of sending a team to Great Britain originated in Sydney, and the Ru<?by Union in that city are making all arrangements in connection with the confempUted tour. At Christchurch on Monday a prominent dog owner made a pathetic appeal to Mr Justice Johnston to be excused from serving, on tht. ground tbat he waa • training dogs.'for the Waterloo Cup and j would lose a large sum of money by his j having to serve on tbe jury instead of j looking after the preparation of his dogs. His Honor (says the P»e«) was obdurate , in his refusal to allow the interests of the j candidates for the forthcoming Waterloo | Cup to predominate over that of public ; justice, and the disappointed owner had j perforce to take his seat amongst the j good men and true, much to his chagrin. When the Lyttelton left. Picton a turkey unplucked was placed in the ryfriger- : ating chamber, and reached England in a j perfectly pure state. *!'The party to whom '■ it was consigned had it valued hy a L-.n---don poulterer who gave it at 15?, and he . was in . the habit of giving more for in- j ferior birds. Turkeys realise here from j 3s to ss, and it has been suggested that the j Pelorus Sound is admirably adapted for | the rearing of these birds, as they require | plenty of space, tlieir habits being of a j wandering nature. Henw- it is not ad- j visable to rear them to any extent in J agricultural districts. The question has often been raised. What will become of the Pelorus Sound when rvll its timber is gone ? If what has b>.n suggested—the rearing of turkeys— can be brought to a successful issue, thure wiU bo yet a chance of developing a n-.<w industry.— VFarlborQugh Express.
