--♦ (KttOM OUR OWN CORKBSPONDHNT.) Wellington*, 21. Some strange rumors of political log-rolling have been flying about since yesterday, aud though the reticence displayed by the Nelson, Canterbury and Westland members led people to believe that something unusually important to thpir respective districts was on the move. They had a meeting yesterday at Vogel's house, tht- proceedings, it was surmised, being in connection with cablegrams received from the AgentGeneral and • delegates sent Home to form a company to construct the East and West Coast (Middle Island) railway, and stating that no difliculty was existing in that direction if the Colony would guarantee interest on the capital subscribed. The rumor went a step further alleging that in return for such concession the Canterbury, Nelson, and Westland members would he bound to give a block vote for Sir Ju ius and his Government on all vital questions that may arise dnring the rt aainde.r of the session. The mystery was cleared up to ao.ne extent this afternoon,' when Yogel made a statement in the Hom-e to tbe effect that a well-known Engl .-ah firm i had entered iuto< arrangement, tor tut: construction of the East and West Coast and Nelson Railway, sad that they asked iv addition to the land grant a guaranteed payment of £97,000 in excess of working expenses per annum for tweuty years, payable in London half yearly, commencing after the railways are finislVHl. . and they state it is intended to finish .them iv from three to five year*. Government propose to usk the House to consider the subject in Commiti.ee on Friday next. They will prepare a resolution approving of the proposal on condition that after the works are completed, and when the payment of £ 97.000. begins, half the cost, whatever it may be, shall be charged to the provincial district of Canterbury, north of RangitKta, and to tiie distri'.-iw of Nelson and Westland, as well a.* the entire cost of maintaining the main roads between ' Nelson and Greymouth and between ! Christchurch and Hokitika. They will propose as a method of imposing the charge that it should be done by means of property tax ( iv the districts just mentioned. Lobby gossip nays that a mutually agreeable compact may not improbably be eutered into between the Government and the northern members, to the effect that in, consideration of the latter giving Ministers a loyal and united support, Ministers wil! renew the San Francisco mail contract, and abandon the Native Land Disposition Bill after its second reading. The Native Minister assures me the Governmunt have r-o intention of abandoning the Native Land Bill.
