EAST AND WEST COAST RAILWAY.

[lytteltox times.] When we inflicted on our readers certain extracts from that unfortunate journal, the New Zealand Times, we <iid so with a purpose. We wished to show our readers the infinite fvienship and loving kindness of Wellington frr Canterbury. No donbt onr readers saw enough to saisfy themselves 01 the subject. Since tlien we hare been looking through the speech of a pro* ininent North Island politician — * speech made in the days of abolitioi . The. speaker was a gentleman whose name is still a house-hold word it New Zealand, and is specially venerated in Wellington. In doing his best — wherein he proved effective — to set the Canterbury members of the day at odds with their friends of Otago, the speaker laid great stress on the brotherly love and identity of interests which bound together Canterbury and Wellington. Bnt those were the days in which we had a land revenue. We did not want anything ; we had much to give away, to lose, to be tricked out of. Tliervfore, the arm of brother Wellington circled oor neck, and his friendly voice sworw that hv would never dewrt ns — while we bad a farthing in onr pocket. And be did not. Bnt the last farthing kan gone now, and where is Wellington? Canterbury has even tbe audacity, for the first time since, its settlement, to ask the colony for something. It is not much. No province in N««tr Zealand has ever asked for so little assistance towards so great a work. What Canterbury, Nelson and We«l land ask is for a guarantee of a sum amounting to about £38,000 annually, for two or three years. Needless to siy the three provinces concerned will pay their quota towards this amount. Ten times this amount of Government money has been annually spent in the town of Wellington for many year*
