Our rofgmn* are open to the di*'w>tion of all matters of public iateret*. but me are in m irrry Utntf/teJ with the vie** qfomr correspondent*. MAINTENANCE CONTRACTS. To this Editor Inangahua Ttmm.) Sir— l trust that you will excuse roe for troubling yon with my grievances, bat I woald like to impress on yinir mind that travelling progres ion per coach to Reefton aloiijj cbe bank of the shining riven of the Buller and luangahua it indeed attended wUh a hetenigeniuscongloineration of very glaring difficulties, more especially that part situate from abont two raile» below the Junction au-i >r» towards Larry's Creek. There was one particalar spot I advised tbe driver to leave some of the harness loose, so that we might have an opportunity «>f judging what way the horses disappeared. Iwas glad to notice that a canoe w»s placed close by it I asked tbe coachman if that was a precaution taken by him ; he said no, but probably it was a forethought on the maintenance contractors part. I think it would be much more to the emtractor* credit to put on labor and have this disgraceful state of the nad put in order. From what lean learn about maintenance eontta.ts, men are in the habit of taking them too cheap, depending «n their own labor to carry out the work. The consequence m that the road is in a half -fowhed state untH their time expires, and the travelling public have to put op witfr the inconvenience. The County authorities should carry n«t their coutraots. or have it done at the on»tn»«:lor» or their snrities ex|iense. Again apologwiag for troubling you. lam, etc., A Frbeqcect Travkkuk. PerCusco.
