PARLIAMENTARY

WitLixoTO*, 13. The House was enjjhged all night on the Estimates. After the. Charitable Aid Bill had Keen disposed of nothing of interest occurred. 14. In the House this morning, the Hospitals and Charitable Aid Dill was read a third time and passed, after receiving a most Revere mangling in committee, and the Estimates were commenced. In the House this afternoon, Sir Julius Vojj«'| gave notice to introduce th« District Hail ways Purchasing Bill. Mi- Or. F. Richardson was to have moved that a return be laid before the House of nil papers, telegrams, and correspondence m-eived or sent l.y the Government on the subject of the East and West Coast and Nelson Railway i sine* the signing of the contract. The { motion could only tie put if it was j unopposed. There was no debato upon it, and the Premier annihilated its prospects by intimating a wish to speak upon it. The House then went into Committee on the Hours of Polling Bill, which took them all the evening. The hours to which the poll should 1»e open were altered from 8 to 6.30 (the bill only nffects city electorates). After this the anchor of the bill, Mr Birron, displayed a keen auxiety to get the hill out of Committee, again, and pathetically implored the. House to accept the numerous amendments that were moved to report progress. During the debate there was a very amusing passage at arms between Messrs Seddon and Feigns. Something led to a dispute between them, and Mr Fergus alluded to the fact that there were resurrections on the West Coast at election times. The mem- er for Eumara retorted that it was' very much better for people to be resur rected and vote as white men, then for Chinamen to come up and vote nnder the name of M'Tavish, and as they did at Wakitipu. Fergus indignantly denied this. Dating the debate. Mr Holmes bluntly denounced the people, of Auckland as a beer swilling people, and having swinish instincts. Sir George Grey was in a great fury, and several jokes at the expense of the Government, such as urging the Premier to lead his last charge heroically. Finally, after nine motious had l»een made to cease thti action, and seven to report ! progress, progress was reported, and tho Bill was practically killed.
