Poets as us well publicists tre swelling the chorus of praise ; and'as a sample of tb« eulogies pronounced upon Mr Gladstone by the former we are tempted to quofe thissonnett from the pen of C. P. Cranch, of Cambridge (Massacbnsk-tte):— For pence, and all that follows in her path— Nor slighting honor and his country's fame, ' He stood unmoved, and dared to face the blame Of party spirit and its turbid wrath He saw in vision the drwut aftermath. Should war once kindle its world circling flame Through Asian tribes that bear tbe British name. Time few such crisis fora people bath And few roch lenders. Calmly be pursued A course at which the feebler spirt's sneered, The bolder fumed with clamor loud aad rode ; And while the world still doubted, hoped, and feared This chief a bloodless victory hath won— , Britannia's wisest, bust, and bravest son.
