The Inangahua Times. PUBLISHED TRI-WEEKLY. FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 18, 1885.
There was a tolerably long siting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday, tl)« I usij ness occupying the whole dny. In the eve of Aiken v. Moor, an notion for trespass on a section in Broadway, Mr Lynch for defendant raised the question of jurisdiction, contending that the -dispute concerned the title to l»nd. Mr North for the plaintiff asked for an ad'onrnment to enable him to produce authorities against the point raised. The adjournment was granted to next Court day. In the owe of Oereud v. Tnangahua Connty Council evidence was taken at some length. The action was to recover L 5 damages for injury done to plaintiff's land and orchard by the flooding of the same through the erection of a dam. The facts were not disputed, the ro«al question being «s to plaintiff's right to recover. His Worship said the case was an important one, and he wonM therefore reserve his decision un*H next Court day. One or two civil cases were postponed until next sitting, on the application of the parties. It is announced that the Rev. P. R. Monro, of Westport, will deliver a lecture in the Presbyterian Church this evening, subject : "The Christian Utopia," being a rejoinder to the Hon. R. Stout's lecture on Utopias, Past and Present. To those who have already had the plea? sure of listening to the rev. lecturer it is unnecessary to sayj'that to-night an intellectual treat will be afforded such as is rarely available in Reefton. The subject of the lecture is one of the widest interest to men of every shade of opinion, and in such able hands cannot fail to be instructive in the highest degree. Mr Monro will also conduct services on Sunday morning and eveniug next in the Presbyterian Church, Reefton, and in the afternoon at Boatman's. The Reform Company, Boatman's completed then- first crushing on Tuesday last, with the excellent result, of 107oz of gold from 109 ton* of stone. The yield* it is unnecesa ary to add, is a highly pay febleone, anil th* margin of profit remain* ing will enable the Company to open up a \evi\ that ''will give 150 ft. if^cks, and' 'thus providq a long season of crushing. The success which hw attended the oper* ations of this r c|>inpajgr t >4loul<l.prftve.a. strong incentive to other companies, and with" a similar display of enterprise in other directions we may hope M soon see the'drooping spirit of the field raised. We understand the South Hopeful Company, which adjoins the Refotm, will now recommence operations at an early date. The directors of the Welcome Company were advised by telegram on Wednesday last that the new driving shaft for >thtf«ngine Was shipped at Port* Chalmers on the previous day,' and will therefore reach Greynwuth before the end of the week. The company expect to reach the reef in five weeks from starting work. We have been requested to remind the public that mineral and oth. r local productions for the London Exhibition must reach Wellington within one month from date. So far as we are aware no steps hay« yet been taken here to secure the representation of the Inangahua on the occasion in question, but we earnestly hope some public spirited residents will take the subject in" hand, and make the best use of the limited time remaining. Mr Warden Bird wilt be happy to furnish all information required as t> the disposition of exhibits from this district. The business of the session not being so near the close as was thought a few dayt ago, Mr Menteath does not now expect to leave Wellington before Monday next, aud yesterday wired Mr Noonan to this effect. j We publish this morning the memorandum of registration of the Larnach Gold Mining Company. It will be seen the shares are all held between Reefton, Westport, and Lyell, the share list being a substantial and influential one.
