Sydvfy, 19. The A.J.C. Derby was run at Raudwich this afternoonn and resulted as follows : — Nordenfeldt 1 Uralla 2 First Chester 8 Only five horses started, Yonrloo being scratched. Nordenfeldt assumed the lead at the commencement, and maintained that position all tlm way round. Gladstone, in view, of the approach ins,' general elections issued a political manifesto to the constituents of Midlothian, in which he urges the complete withdrawal of the British troops from Egypt at the earliest possible moment, and expresses himself distinctly opposed to annexation, or indefinite occupation of that country. Speaking on Home affairs, Gladstone advocates the reform of the House of Lords and the land laws. The necessity for the readjustment of the incidence of taxation was pointed out, aa well as fur the extension of the principle of local self-Government. He expresses himself also ready to grant Ireland any system of self Government compatible with the maintenance of the supremacy of the Crown, the integrity of the Empire and the authority of Parliament. In conclusion Mr Gladstone announces that he speaks as the working chief of the Liberal party.
