The case against Jaraeß Walclen, committed on a recent charge of tarring a person named Muir at the Lower Hutt is to be heard to-morrow. John A, Gordon for larceny of a spring cart was sentenced to three years. Several previous convictions wete on record against him Charles Edward V-'alson, a lad 14 years of age, was sentenced to one years hard labor for receiving stolen property. John Cumming for housebreaking was sentenced to three years. George Thomas Skinner was found guilty of forgi.«g and uttering a cheque for £5 lis 6d on the Bank of New Zealand.'aud sentence deferred till Thursday. The negotiations for the San 'Frisco contract are proceeding, and will probably be settled in two or three days. Various difficulties which have cropped up have so far been adjusted. The prorogation of the New South Wales parliament was tbe latest o stacle. That, however, has been surmounted by the Government of that colony agreeing to" sign the contract subject to the ratification by Parliament and to make payment under the contract un .^parliament has decided whether'^not* to approve of it.
