The clergy and many of the leading Catholic citizens including the reception committee and the Minister of Justice, Mr Tole, boarded the vessel at the earliest moment, and warmly welcomed the Bishop. A procession was formed to the Cathedral when several j addresses were presented to Hi 3 Lordship congratulating him on his safe return. Tho Bishop responded in suitable terms. Bloomh'eld, was charged by the police with wilful and corrupt perjury in connection with the said case. S!ie was remanded for seven days and admitted to bail. CHRiSTcnuucii 20. A meeting of the East and West. Const Railway Guarantors was held to-day, when the delegates, Messrs Dobsou and j Fell were present. A lengthy report was read detailing the events which preceded and led to the offer of Mi'iggs and Son. The report concluded : — From information we could get respecting our scheme we felt satisfied that it would he impos- [ sible to get it taken up on a land grant basis only, and that tiie offer of Meiggs and Son was a reasonable one which deserved the C'tisideraHuii of the Government and House. We therefore cabled the offer to the Government and returned to New Zealand, leaving Mr Scott to take the necessary steps in concluding the contract should the otFer have been accepted by the House. We cannot but. regret that in some quarters this offer made by a firm which occupies so good a position in the financial world should have been treated with such contumely, and spoken of in such intemperate language. Such behaviour cannot fail to have a damaging effect upon the reputation in England of our fellow colonists as reasonable and intelligent men, and will doubtless materially add to the difficulties in placing any similar scheme upon the London market.
