The up Grey coach brought a big load of passengers on Friday evening, there being no less than twenty one persons aboard. Some delay was caused tin the road owing to the coach and a loaded dray happening to meet in a narrow part of the road between Ahaura and Nelson Creek. ! The coach drew close into the bank to allow the dray to pass, but the horses in latter were rather skittish and swerved against the coach snapping the pole short off. The damage was quickly repaired, and the coach reached tiere at about 6.30. p.m. It appears that the civil action — Martin v. Aiken, heard in the Supreme Court, Hokitika, on Wednesday last broke down completely, as upon the close of the case for plaintiff His Honor informed the jury there was no case to go before theni. and they w. re discharged. Mr Jones was then informed that he had nothing to answer. Costs were allowed to defendant upon the highest scale, namely, 7 per cent upon €I,OOT, the amount of damasks sued for. and professional costs and witnesses expenses, amonntins* altogether to €129 19s. The case of Martin r. Bird stands adjourned till the next sitting of ♦he Sjpreme Court. The prospcuHon for alleged embezzlement instituted hy the Government Insurance Department against F. R. *eaborn, in the Supreme Court, Hokitika, resulted in a verdict of "not guilty" being returned, and accused was discharged. The verdict appears to have been a very popular one in Hokitika as the finding* of the jury was received with loud applause in Court, so much so that His Honor found it necessary to remind the audience that they were not in a theatre. The defence raised was that accused was not a servant of the Insurance Department, and the contention was accepted by the jury. Mr W. H. Jones, of the firm of Jones and Menteath, who conducted the defence received great kudos for the ability with which he handled the case, and at the conclusion was warmly congratulated. The heavy rain of the last three days has kept the rivers in constant flood, and yesterday all traffic was suspended both north and south. The Nelson coach did not arrive yesterday aftermon, being unable to proceed beyond the Lyell. It was reported in town yesterday morning that one of the bridges on the Grey road had been left high and dry, the river having scoured a new channel. We were unable to learn what bridge was referred to, but the report is generally discredited. It is also said that some further damage has been done by the encroachment of the river at the Left-hand Branch crossing and that an awkward snag has lodged iv the centre of the old ford. The report of Professor Kirk upon the various diseases of fruit trees in New Zealand, and the best remedies to be applied in each case, has been printed for circulation, and a copy of it should he in the hands of every fruit grower and Gardner in the Colony. The report _*ives the experience obtained over a very wide area of the Colony, and the information thus presented will be found extremely useful and valuable to all those engaged in orchard culture. As the Government have considered it worth while to appoint a special officer to report upon the diseases of fruit trees, they should now go a step further, and in order to give the colony the benefit of the information thus obtained distribute the reports gratuitously to all persons interested in the subject. Professor Kirk's time and experience, and the money of the Colony will have been expended to very little advantage unless the information is placed within the reach of all who need it. Copies of the report should therefore be furnished to the local bodies throughout the colony, or the postmasters, for free circulation.
