At a meeting of the Committee oi the East and West Coast and Nelson Railway League, h«ld to-day, it was resolved that the League recommend co-operation between the . people of Canterbury, Westland, and Nelson, to secure the construction of the line by the Government simultaneously with the Northern trunk and Otago Central, .uid advocate the extension of membership of the League to all the Colony, with a view of securing political support to those members who will advocnte the completion of the trunk railway system, and suhseqnent cessation of further borrowing for public works until the whoV railway system has become self-support ing. Mr BaHance.had an interview with the Qneen of Makea, of Raratonga, and the other members of the Embassy to-day. He presented a number of Mosgiel mats, rugs, and blankets to them. Political matters were adjourned to another interview. The prospectors on some land beyonfl Kauri Point, near Wade, have, it is said, discovered payable gold in a sand stone hill. The Bank of New Zealand say of the parcel that it showed 2ozs of gold and 2ozs of silver per ton. It has been decided to forward 20 loads to be treated by La Mon te's process. The prospectors aie confident that the ground will pay as there are millions of tons in the sand stone hills on the Point, which are 500 feet high. Punedix 27. At the inquest on Ro'»t.son, killed on the railway near Green Island, a verdict of accidental death was returned, with a rider that the rule prohibiting persons jumping off trains in motion should be strictly enforced. Nelson, 27. A fatal accident occurred to-day near the Haven road, where excavations were, going on upon the hillside for reclamation works. A small quantity of earth fell and a stone striking a man named Jo!m Winter, knocked him down. When he was picked up he was dead, his neck being broken. The scene was heart remliiijr, the poor fellow's wife and mother, both being present At the inqnest a verdict of accidentally killed was reburned. Winter leaves a wife and two children. j
