In this room tlure vas kept a drum of kerosene oil, vhich holds when full ahout four faHo'is, and a swing lamp (fed with H?r<»seiK» oil) ia also hunj» there. The morning was fine, with a very slight breeze ai»p<nl, which, however, freshened considerably '<efo! # c we got to Gisb »me, but again fell innuednt.ely the fire was dscoveied. T\u captain ordered the ship to l»e. p^it ;«' top spetnl ahead, with a \iew, ij possible, of reaching the aitchoragf at Gisborne. The fire was raging at its worst but separated by the iron walls of the engine room from that important compartment These iron walls in several places became red hot, and the engine room was tilled with h large quantity of smoke. The atmosphere was stifling from that cause and tJie intense heat, but tiie engineers stnek firmly to their j.osts. The second engineer, I btlieve, remained b> low at the engines the whole time of the fite, but about five minuhs before we reached Gistariie he sent ur word he would lie compelled to comt on deck in a very short time. ThifiitittiHtion was convoyed to the captain, who Rent back word to say thitil comp -llpd to !• aye the engines were to be left at full speed, and that when b< wanted them stopped he would l>ring the ship up s-» as to send the smoke clear of 'h' 1 engintwooin, when th» \ fimst ci e'eavour to run down and stop the iMigiu-8. M antinie the place of anchorage was reached, and a signal given to BfopB f op the engines. This was done by the second engineer, and the engines were also duly reverse*!, stopped, and all necessary valves at. tended to to ensure the saf-ty of th ship. The command to let go anchor was given, but as the ship had a little more way on than was usual sone of the cable was injured by the strai when the anchor took the ground. About half an hour after the outbreak of the ttre, tlie second offi.-er whs ordered to got all the boats cleared and ready to lower, which was done in perfect order. As soon as the anchorage was reached, the Honks were ordered to l»e lowered, and th' ladies were led to the gangway and saft-lv placed in the first boat. No confusion or panic of any kind whatever to<»k place among tlie passenger*. Bo far, from it being correct that there! was any rush either for the first or ay of the other boats, as appeared in the Gishrv.ie paper, I saw a iiinn'»»-r of Indies still standing or. the !hip i>an< deck after a number had gonf to t!v gangway, and I went up mys-'f to persuade them to go in the boat, and Can i-d a little girl to the gangway.
