(FROM OITU OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Wfllinoton, 2. Mi Menteath, M.H.R, and Mrs Mmiteath arrived in Wellington this morning. Sir Julius Vogcl leaves by the Hinemoa to-night on a visit to the Waiwera hot springs. The Caledonian gathering held on Saturday was a great success. Over 8,000 people paid for admission at the gate. The Union steamer Maravoa with the Homeward mails reached San Francisco on the 29th December, one day lite. The Manaponri with the inward mail left the same port for Auckland on the 20th Dec, also a day late. The new year's holidays lmve pissed off amidst lovely weather. The various attractions by sea and on land were largely patronised. Two vehicles collided on the Island Bay road this afternoon, and the occupants were thrown out. A Mrs Susan Davis had her thigh fractured in three places ; J. Hutchinson, an expressman had his right leg fractured in two places; and Mr C. E. Hansen received some rather nasty bruises about the head. The injured persons were removed to the Hospital. Lyttklton, 1. The Lytteltou regatta passed oft rery successfully, though the wind in the morning was rather light, the wafer was excellent for the rowing aces. There was a large number of persons present. The four oared race ivas won by Kaiapoi. The senior lonble, sculls was won by the Union [Boating Club's boat, the Eaiapoi l*o;U vhich came in first, beiug disqualified

for taking the wrong course. Five vessels started in the champion race, ' which was won by the ELmo, cutter, of Lyttelton. The yacht race was one of the finest seen here. The Iska, of Wellington, won easily. AftKI.ANM> 2. Admiral Tyron and party have returned from the Lake country. A ball was gi\en at the Northern Club in hi 3 honor. The admiral anainged a race between Chief Paul's canoe crew, and four selected boats of H.M.S., Nelson, over a four mile course. There was great excitement. The ship's gig defeated the Maoris by a length. Hastings, 2. The bush fires at M<kitnka and Norsewood are stili spreading at an alarming rate. .Mr Ballance this morning went over the settlement at Matatoka and arranged with the chairman of the Town Board of Matatoka and Om>ondville for the formation of a relief com mittee.
