o*r rohmn.* are <>pen to tie di*rn<tio» qf alt matters of pub/tc 'Hterest, but wo are in no tea if i-i(utift<J with fht view* of our cot 'res/> -i n den ft. » " If ignorai c« is bliss, i Tis fully to be wise." (To the Editof Isajtoahtta Time*.) ! Sib.— ln this morning's issue of the | Insmyalitw Herald appeared one of the } most remarkable prodactions that has I graced the column * if that journal fur a ' long time — remarkable only for the unpardonable misrepresentation and ignorance it discloses, and rarely to be met with now-a-days. It s evidently a Weak attempt to answer the letter of "The Old { Man," that appeared in your issue of the 22nd ultimo, and which apparently Closed ho little discomfit are in certain quarters. " The CMd Man " having gone down souu- ' try for a few days forms my excuse for reviewing the correspondence of " Vires." , This supercilious writer says that he has seached the map from north to south without being able to determine the position of Waihem< County ; but finally admits that after 'diligent study " he has 1 discovered that "there is a little up o»un- - try hamlet of thit name on the Shag . river." This you will readily perceive • was wholly irrelevant to the question he ask», na-uoly, "Can y< -uniform. me where Waihemo County h." But as it would be 1 ungenerous to doibt his having studied ' the map from north to south, the only 1 feasible conclusion to arrive at is (and this supposition is born 3 out by the many incongruities of his letter) that " Vires " in his searching and studying has had the ■ map "upside down." I never knew , until now that the town of Nenthorn is situate«l on the boundary of a "little np country hamlet" called Waihemo. But "Vires" dismantles himself of his stupidity, and admits that Waihemo is an " insignificant county " *n<\ describes it as being six times smtiiar than the Inangahua county, and many times more iiniinpo"a:it. Well, Waihemo county is about 50 miles in length, hence it follows according to Vires that our county is 300 mil^s long. The ctnrge that "The Old Mai's" letter was simply the tale of a travel er is a groundless surmise. I am informed that the details were reliable and communicated by a member of the Waihemo County Council, at the time on a visit to Reef ton. So much for the authenticity of "The Old Man's" statements. I beg to state that the county Waihemo is situated in the province of Otago, large and populous, rich Hot i in agriculture and minerals. The County Uoitucil there, unlike ours, has not plunged the ratepayers neck deep into debt. Then they pay cash and have no occasion to resort to the expediency of issuing " oonty BUs " as a circulating medium, and which not (infrequently become dishonored as is the case here I have now finished with this novitiate correspondent, and in taking leave would enjoin upon him the necessity of ooihining himself more closely, should he again attempt to appear in public print, to fusts, and steer clear of the abyss of misrepra» , sentation. I im Ac, THrrn>t*sxM<at.
