+. The adjourned monthly meeting of the Council was held on Tuesday last. Present : The Chairman (Cr Irving) and Crs. Duncan, Campbell, Twuliill and M'Ginley. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE I N WARDS. To Property Tax Commissioner for warding values of property in the County. Menfceath thanking him for his valuable assistance re securing a grant for the construction of ap proaches to Matikatika bridge. To Secretary Reefton Athenreum, notifying the grant of subsidy ot £50 on the condition that the public be admitted to the Bending Room upon the payment of an annual fee of 5/. To A. S, Menteath re the construction of road at MurchiSon. To the same re bridges. To the manager Happy Valley Co. re payment of £23 15s, being proportion of cost of constructing track to the Compauy's mine. To Chairman 1 ! Duller County re northern boundary of County, and suggesting that the live be definitely fixed. To the Secretary United Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, Nelson, enclosing certain information asked for. To Property Tax Commissioner fur nishing estimate of rateable value of property in the County. To A. S. Menteath, M.H.R., re tenders for erection of Left-hand branch bridge. Correspondence Outwari>s, From P. Harris, t applying for hawker's license. From A. S. Menteath, re subsidy for Biver River road, and stating that the Government had agreed to a certain sum being expended in improving the track ; also re lnangahua bridge and bridge over Left-hand Branch. From Under Secretary Public Works, re approaches to Matikitaka bridge and other matters. From John Brazil, asking permission to re-erect two gates across the public road near his premises, to keep cattle off his land. From Cochrane and Sows, requesting that the gates in question be removed, as an obstruction to traffic. From W. Heaphy, calling attention to the necessity of constructing a track from Bouttnau's to the Lone Star lease. Cr M'Ginley moved tDittfc the Engineer be instructed to report upon the cost of the work. The tra^k will be about three quarters of a mile in length. The motion was seconded by Cr. Twohill and cArripd. From Jules Simon re dishonored promissory note for £29, aud asking payment for saraf\ From Secretary Reefton Athenasum stating that the Athenrettm could not accept the Council Bubsidy upon the condition imposed. Cr. Craig thought the Athenaeum Committee had benn very dilatory otherwise they might hai'e received a considerable amount from the General Government. However, he did not think it would be wise of the Council to raise obstacles iv the matter.

Cr. Campbell would be willing to j vote for the subsidy if the fee of admission to the Reading Room were , raised to 10/ per annum j The Chairman said he would not ! like to vote against the subsidy, but at the same time he thought the public of Reefton should have access to the Reading Room upou the payment of a small sum. Cr. Craig moved that a subsidy of £50 be granted upon the condition that a fee of 10s per annum be charged to Keefton visitors to the Athenaeum. From James Moor calling attention to the state of the ford on the Rainy Creek track. The specifications required that the ford should be cleared once a month, but this had not been done. Cr. Craig doubted whether the clause of the specifications referred to applied to the contract in question. The Chairman differed. The clause applied to every ford within the contract. Cr. Craig said the general opinion was that the ford should not he touched as it would only make it worse. He did not believe that J. Moor ever crossed the ford with a load. From Emerson stating that the police could not accept appointment of Inspector of Nuwsi ices. Cr. Twohill moved that Mr F. Smith be appointed. ', The clerk pointed out hat the first thing to do was to rescind the reso lution appointing Sergt Slattery. Cr. Twohill moved that Frank Smith receive the appointment. Cr. Campbell seconded the motion, which was put and carried. From Mr T. North, solicitor for J. Oxenham, claiming compensation for injuries sustained by Air Oxenham through the faulty condition of the Newton bridge, and claiming £100. The letter stated that Oxenham was liding over the bridge when a plank gave way, the horse falling upon Mr Oxenham and serioosly injuring him. The Chairman said this was only one side of the case, and the best thing to do was to refer the matter to a committee to enquire into the tuatter. Referred to the Engineer to report at an early date, and Mr North to be notified to that effect From La very and party applying for an advance of £100 on their maintenance coutract. A memo wan at tached by the Engineer statins; that the grant could not be made under the specifications. Cr. Campbell thought the contractors were well entitled to the advance, as they were doing better work than any other maintenance contractor on the road. The Chairman concurred. The advance could be made. Agreed to. From J. O'Day, complaining of Buchanan and party working near the road at Hampden, endangering traffic The Chairman said there was no doubt the men were trespassing on the road reserve, which was one chain wide. The matter had been dealt with. From D. O. Preshaw, Secretary Reefton Hospital, announcing that six trustees had he&n elected, and asking that the Council appoint five members to'act with them. The Chairman said he had notified the appointment of Crs. Campbell, Twohiil, Craig, M'Ginley, and himself.
