MISCELLANEOUS.
Cambridge is planning a memorial of Kingsley. Mr Labouchere, of London Truths says that he has never met with more pratical, sensible mci than the Irish Nationalist leaders when not under the influence of temporary excitement. 11 1 have, " he says, "been greatly struck with their broadness of view, which contrasts advantageously with oar supercilious mode of treating political opponents, oar insularity, and oar want of facility to grasp new ideas. It might be well f>r married men to notice what kind of scissors their wives are in the habit of a sing. If they (the scissors), are long >laded and sharppointed, get some u«w ones with Wont points, such us counter jumpers carry in their vest pockets, and have the sharp pointed ones disappear mysteriously. Two men were killed in the United States recently in one week by scissors in the hands of their wives. All the vessels of the Dundee whaling fleet hare n turned from Davis Straits, and the following particulars of the result of tin seal and whale fisheries for the yeir just closed will be interesting : — Se'en of the Dundte steamers went to Newfoundland and captured 73,390 sea's. Last year the catch at Newfoundland was 34,392 seals, so that this year there is an increase of 38,061 s^als. At Greenland fonr ships got 10,750 seals, against 17,119 lart year. These vessels also secured 41 bottle-nose whales, while last they had 136. This year 6369 fewer seals have been captured at Greenland and 95 fewer bottle nose whales, while the yield of oil has fallen off to the extent of 244 tons. Twelve shipß wentto the Davisßtrait«, whale fishing, and the catch of 28 whale yielded 10 nons bone and 359 tons of oil. Last year these ships had 69 whales, which produced 40 tons of bone and 817 tons of oiL The value of the year's fishing is computed thus : —Whalebone, £ U,000 : whale oil, £7,863 ; seal oil, £11,520 ; and sealskins, £14,729 ; total £49,147.
