THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE FORTH BRIDGE.
The work — unprecedented in some r« spects — of building the foundations of the Fo»th Bridge was completed about a fortnight ago, after occupying exactly three years. Considering the exceptional difficulties of the case, this is reckoned, very expeditions work, and it would have Wen still more speedy !>ut for the accidental capsizing of one of the huge cassions ou New Year's Day I^Bs. The caisson was not successfully floated again till nine mouths afterwards. Six of the piers have been sunk through water and mud to a depth of from 50ft to 80ft, and besides iron, steel, &c, thftre have been absorbed in the work 400,000 cubic ftet of granite and 120,000 cubic yards of concrete and rubble masonry. Very little more masouwork remains to be done, and as the vest is steelwork, a»I is in a comparatively convenient
position for working afc it, the progress should now be rapid. The, bridge is already visited by engineers and others interested in mechanical matters from all parts of the world, and every moath will mike, it worth seciiig.
