The memoralists intend that the seal fishing should he an open fishery, under proper restrictions and supervision. In reply to a telegram from the members for Mataiira and Awarna asking that the mutter be held over till after the meeting of PiwHament, a reply has been received from the Under Secretary, stating that it is proposed to extend the time for receiving tenders till the 17th May. A remark that such proceedings brought boxing matches into disrepute was contended to mean that Pettongell was disreputable. The defence was that the words did not bear the meaning imputed, and that they were true in substance, and in fact. No witnesses wei'H called for the defence, but the jury returned a verdict for the defendants, that there was no libe.l, and judgment was given accordingly, with costs on the lowest .scale.
